Kurt Widmann
August 1, 1930 - May 30, 2020
Tribute
Born August 01, 1930 in Bruck/Mur Austria, died May 30, 2020 in Osoyoos, BC.
Kurt is survived by his sister Hannelore, his two daughters Doris and Monica, his 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, as well as extended family and friends. Kurt was deeply loved and will be truly missed by most everyone whose life he touched.
Kurt was raised and educated in Austria. He married Julie in 1958 and then immigrated with her to Canada. He was a devoted husband for 44 years until Julie’s unexpected death in 2002. She was the mother of his two daughters, Doris and Monica, and Grandmother of their children.
Kurt worked for Alcan in Kitimat for over 32 years and then retired to Osoyoos. During his working career starting as a Tool and Die Maker he was involved in Machine building, erecting Ski lifts, Equipment maintenance, including Job planning and Engineering Project Management. His retirement to Osoyoos in 1992 allowed him and Julie to take life easy, travel, enjoy life and spend time with the grandchildren. Osoyoos was important because it was the center between his daughters residences of Vancouver and Calgary. After Julie’s passing, he continued to follow his passion for Chess, Curling, Lawn bowling and Lane Bowling. Kurt was known for his competitive spirit, striving to be the best, which brought him success to win the open and closed Canadian Chess Championship and helped Canada to win a Bronze Medal at the XI.Olympiad. His performance rating over many years of competing was awarded with a title for life “Senior International Chess Master. He did win many trophies in different sporting events throughout his life of which winning 3rd place in the Canadian Bowling team championship made him especially proud because of his late in life start in bowling.
Kurt did not want a service, or any fan fair. There will be a small family reunion at the Osoyoos Cemetery where his ashes will be buried next to Julie. Many memories will be shared. We will laugh, we will cry, we will remember.

We were very sorry to hear of Kurt’s passing. We enjoyed bowling with him and Mary the past few years. It won’t be the same come September.

Sincere condolences to sister, Hannelore, daughters Doris and Monica and all family members. I first met Kurt when I joined the Osoyoos Lawn Bowling Club, where we bowled together for several years. I admired his ability and learned much about the game from playing with him. He will be missed.
