Tribute
On Wednesday, March 27, 2019 Mrs. (Annie) Ellen Solvason of Oliver passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 95 years.
She was predeceased by her husband Ingvar Paul Solvason; brothers Clarence and Delbert Cramer; parents Ada & Jesse Cramer and son-in-law Steve Simcox.
Ellen will be fondly remembered by her loving family including daughters Kristine, Bernice (Doug), Nita (Brian), Fern and Laura (Craig). Ellen has thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren and loved them all!
Ellen was an RN trained at the Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg. She worked as a special duty nurse at the Grace Hospital as well as general duty. Ellen was also the charge nurse at Idlewood Acres in Palo Alto, California.
Ellen enjoyed travelling and in her later years, spent several enjoyable winters in Arizona and Mexico. She was always gathering pictures and postcards to use as subjects for her paintings.
She also travelled to Holland with others for the commemoration of the liberation of Holland with a highlight trip to Keukenhof Gardens near Amsterdam.
Ellen was an avid organic gardener, appreciating every little plant that poked its head up from the earth. She enjoyed all things in nature and prided herself on being a “farm girl” She always enjoyed drawing and painting and produced a prolific number of pictures in water colour, oils, acrylic, pastels and mixed media. She would participate in all the Art shows she could, here in Oliver. One of her paintings was sent to the Juried Art Show in Chilliwack, and won second place. Ellen also enjoyed crafts, usually using the recycled materials she had carefully collected.
Ellen was very involved in her community and was a long time member and volunteer at the Oliver Seniors Centre, the Oliver Art Club, the Friendship Group, and the United Church of Canada. She was one of the original members that spearheaded the building of the Senior Center. The center gave her many enjoyable activities, her favorite being the dancing.
Donations are gratefully accepted for the Canadian Cancer Society or the Oliver United Church.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 am, Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Chapel followed by interment at the Oliver Municipal Cemetery. A reception followed at the Cherry Grove Estates Clubhouse.
