Tribute
On Saturday October 31, 2015, Mr. Alan Keath Porter of Oliver passed away peacefully after a long illness at his home at the age of 93 years.
He was predeceased by his parents Mabel & George Porter; his first wife Joan Coulter; second wife Anne Porter; brother Ken Porter and sister Vera Milner.
Al will be fondly remembered by his loving family including wife Joan Heatherington of Oliver; daughters Vivienne & Lorraine of the UK; stepdaughter Pamela Smith of Oliver; stepson Perry (Danielle) Gangur of Calgary and step-daughter Rosalind Boyle of Penticton; three grandsons and five great-grandchildren of the UK; nephew Trevor Milner of the UK as well as great friends Edward Palmer and wife Wenda McKee of Okanagan Falls and Sherry and Robert Kowalchuk of Penticton.
From 1940 – 1946, Al belonged to #40 Royal Marines Command Group and the original Chindits. He saw service in Egypt, India, and Sicily then to Burma and finally Holland.
After the war, Al worked for a prominent oil company in England. He then immigrated to Canada where he had numerous jobs – a guard at Oakalla Prison; refined oil at Coal Harbour whaling station; worked for the government; was a beekeeper and a carpet cleaner.
Al was a Legion member and helped start the Legion in Westbank.
He and wife Anne travelled all over the USA, went back to England for holidays, to Czechoslovakia, Anne’s birthplace numerous times.
Al enjoyed reading, history, stamp collecting, photography and cooking.
