Albin Berglund Hochsteiner

July 12, 1940 - July 1, 2024

Tribute

On Monday, July 1, 2024, Albin Hochsteiner of Osoyoos passed away suddenly, but peacefully, surrounded by family at the age of 83. He is predeceased by his parents William and Hilda Hochsteiner and his sister Eunice “Toots” Berglund. Albin is survived by his sisters Mavis Trenholm and Gail Hochsteiner; nephew Blaine Trenholm (Sherry); daughters Chanel and Rylee; niece Carla Vieira; and sons Jordan (Ali) and Eric.

Albin was a true sportsman and hunter; no one appreciated a good hunting dog quite like Albin and he won numerous trophies over the years with his hounds at field trials and treeing contests throughout the Pacific Northwest. He owned and operated Pioneer Meat Market as a butcher and a hunting guide/ outfitter, as well as co-owner of Pioneer Car Wash. Albin excelled in many sports including basketball, softball, and hockey. He won many awards and trophies in these athletic endeavours. He loved watching a good horse race, and was a volunteer at Desert Park Race Track for many years and even ran a few of his own horses.

A Celebration of Life for Albin will be announced at a later date.

My heartfelt condolences to all of Albin’s family members who are grieving his loss. Albin was a classmate of my late wife, Vera (Clemens). I met him on several occasions when the classmates met to renew friendship and reminisce. He always impressed me with his ready smile and upbeat attitude.
May he rest in peace!

The Savage family has known the Hochsteiner family since 1947. Albin was a favourite for teasing as he preferred dogs and sports to girls. Always smiling and keeping out of kissing distance. A good family friend to all. May he rest in peace. Condolences to the family.

When I was growing up in Osoyoos, Albin was my hero. He was the best basketball shooter I ever knew, with the softest hands on a ball I ever saw. When I became a teacher in Revelstoke, I spent countless hours by myself in the gym after school and on weekends. I shot thousands and thousands of basketball shots, and every time I made one, I thought I was Albin.

Albin was always friendly to me. Even though I was two or three years younger than him, he invited me to a group that went down to Oroville to play touch-football.

My mom and dad deeply respected Albin. Once when mom was very worried about our sick dog, she phoned Albin at the Pioneer Meat Market. Albin, a master of dogs, dropped everything and was at our place in three minutes.

Albin was a remarkable ping pong player and a superb softball catcher. He could hit softballs a mile, and some of his moonshots were caught by opposing fielders in the next orchard. Pissed off, he built a regulation fence well before that orchard to clarify what a home run was.

The last time I saw Albin, he was running a car wash in town, and I met him with my younger son Kyle, then perhaps nine or ten, on the street. With absolute delight, I said to Kyle, “Please meet my greatest Osoyoos hero, the one I have mentioned many times—Albin Hochsteiner!” Albin smiled that big smile of his. And I couldn’t have been happier.

I’m so sorry to hear of Albin’s passing, he was such a interesting man. He made me laugh listening to his stories, and he was very down to earth, and matter affact about life.
My condolences to his family, I’m glad to have known him.
