Aleda Bain

June 19, 1926 - November 9, 2017

Tribute

Aleda Bain passed away peacefully at her residence in Kelowna, BC on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the age of 91 years.

Aleda was born to parents George and Teresa Stoll in Grande Prairie, AB June 19, 1926. She grew up on a farm east of Wembley and attended Wapiti School. After completion of grade twelve in Grande Prairie, she became a correspondence teacher in Grovedale, AB. There Aleda met Duncan Bain and they were married in 1946 where they took up homesteading. Life on the homestead came to an end in 1953 and with their family of 3 boys, moved onto a farm south of Wembley. In 1957 the lure of more work and better pay brought the family to Valemount, BC where Duncan worked in the forest industry to support their ever growing family which was up to 4 boys and 1 girl. An additional 3 boys were born to the family in Valemount. After Duncan passed away in 2011, Aleda continued to live in Valemount with  kind help from her friends and neighbors. By 2014, living on her own became more difficult, so she moved to the Highlands Retirement Residence in Kelowna where she was near her daughter Sandra for support.

Aleda was predeceased by her husband Duncan, son Eugene, brothers John and Frank (Irene) Stoll, sister Marjorie (Paul) Schmidt, grandson Jeremy Bain, and granddaughter Kylie Bain.

She is survived by her children Michael (Wilma), Terrence (Donna), Ross (Sarah) Bain, Sandra (Tom) Rosin, Doug (Noella), Kevin (Patricia), and Jeffrey (Lynn) Bain, 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 g-g-granddaughter.

After washdays, Aleda always had to find time to patch a few pairs of pants and darn socks. Evenings were often spent knitting or sewing new clothes. These chores were done while helping with homework and gathering in the gossip of the day. She loved to work in her garden and always produced a fine crop of vegetables. Her flower garden was the envy of the neighborhood.

Once all her children were going to school, Aleda did child care in her home, and later worked as a teacher’s aide. The children loved her and she loved them. She also cherished visits from her family, especially when they had grandchildren to bring along with them.

Aleda was always involved in her community.  She belonged to the Amity Club and was the leader of the 4-H sewing class for several years.  She wrote the Valemount Village Council News for 11 years.  Hundreds of volunteer hours were spent with the Valemount Historic Society which published the book, “Yellowhead Pass and Its People” and later set up a museum in the old CNR station. Aleda received several awards for her voluntary community service.

Duncan and Aleda always made an annual trip to Prince George and Grande Prairie to visit family and friends. One of the most memorable trips in their life was a helicopter ride from Valemount to the top of Mount Robson.

A celebration of Aleda’s life will be held in Valemount, BC in the spring of 2018.
