Alice Kalyn

June 16, 1917 - April 15, 2015

Tribute

Alice was born on a farm near Stoughton, SK in the municipality of Tecumseh #65. She was the eldest daughter of a family of four boys and four girls, born to her parents James and Elsie Pritchard.

Alice received her education at Walton School District #830. It was a rural school with one teacher teaching grades one to ten.

To escape the dry, dusty, grasshopper infested land of the early thirties, the family trekked north to Tisdale, SK where they settled in the lush Carrott River Valley. During this move Alice and her younger brother Wallace rode horseback and drove a herd of cattle 250 miles, taking twenty days.

In 1941, Alice and John Kalyn were married, having two sons, James and Ken. In 1960, the family moved to Osoyoos, BC.

Alice was a member of the Osoyoos United Church, joined the Dorcas Woman’s Group, sang in the choir, and was one of the main members of the thrift shop.

She had many hobbies including sewing, knitting, painting, writing poetry and loved gardening. Alice had a great appreciation of nature, but most of all she loved her family.

Alice was predeceased by four brothers Hyllis, Wallace, Emerson and Kenneth; three sisters Irene, Merle and Grace; husband John and eldest son James.

She is survived by her son Ken (Mary Lou); grandson Cody (Ashley); granddaughter Erin (Graham); great-granddaughters Kyah, Raegan and McKenna as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her last wish was to not have any type of funeral service, but would instead ask her friends to make donations to charities of their choice.

My grandparents knew both Alice and John for many years, my mother grew up with the kids. Both John and Alice were very loving, kind people. My annual trips to Osoyoos always included a visit with Alice — whether it be sharing a laugh over some coffee, browsing and chatting at the thrift shop or having fun at the coffee parties after church. I am very grateful for all the time, laughs, fun and stories shared over many, many years. I will miss her kind smile and caring ways but know that I will keep those memories with me always. my condolences to the Kalyn family – may Alice’s teachings and love be with each of you always.

Alice was a very special family friend since the family moved to Osoyoos. She always had great stories or the”good old days” and kept a daily journal since she was a young girl. She was an inspiration, friend, mentor, and an angel that preferred to do so many good things for those in need quietly behind the scene.
My love and prayers to Ken and family, you will miss her greatly. She loved you all so much.I know she will be in your heart and foul forever

I feel lucky to have met Alice. She was a good friend of my Grandmothers. Alice had quick wit and a giant heart. I still expect to see her working away when i walk into the thrift shop. My condolences to her family whom she talked so fondly of.
