Arthur Art O''keefe

April 23, 1921 - March 4, 2011

Tribute

Art’s generous but frail heart has finally stopped beating. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Vera, heartbroken daughter Laurine (Michael) and long time caregiver Sherry Skaros. Predeceased by his beloved son Ken. Art spent his working lifetime caring for others by serving in the medical corps to provide ambulance service in France and Holland, at the Royal Columbian Hospital as an orderly and in the Provincial Gaol system as a guard and practical nurse. As founding and lifetime members of the Surrey Quilter’s Guild, Art and Vera designed and sewed many beautiful quilts. They made many friends and travelled widely while with the Surrey Square Wheelers before moving to Oliver. Art was an active member of the Oliver Senior’s Centre for almost 30 years and a life member of the Oliver and District Heritage Society. Card games were his joy and a win at bingo made his day. Thank you to Dr. Mark Hamilton for all you have done, for so many years, to make Art your miracle patient and to the staff at Heritage House who took such wonderful care of Art and fulfilled his wish to die there. Donations to the Salvation Army, 2463 South Main Street, Penticton, BC V2A 5J1 or the Oliver Food Bank, PO Box 405, Oliver, BC V0H 1T0 would be appreciated. No service by request.

Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service Staff send our condolences to family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

From: Krystyna & David Duncan
Relation: Father of a dear friend

Dear Laurine, Vera, and Michael — We are saddened to hear of Art’s passing on Friday March 4. It is wonderful that you, Laurine, were able to spend the last few hours beside your daddy, holding his hand…and that he knew his beloved ‘girl’ was there with him. Your Dad’s ‘miracle’ years are an example of how to live each given day with strength, dignity, purpose, and acceptance – I can only hope to be and do as much. Art O’Keefe… a valiant soldier all through his life…may he rest in Peace. With love, Krystyna, David & Family
