Arthur Purdon

March 23, 1929 - March 23, 2015

Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Art; husband, father and grandfather on March 23, after a brief illness.  Art is survived by Ilene, his loving wife of 63 years, his five children: Julie (Blair), Linda (Bruce), Carol (Glenn), Don (Lynn), and David (Shelley); 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, as well as his sisters Nancy and Catherine.

Art was born in Regina, Sask. and grew up in B.C., dividing his time between Burnaby and Coombs.  Art graduated from Burnaby South Secondary School in 1948, then earned his Civil Engineering degree from the University of British Columbia in 1952.  Art obtained his B.C. Land Surveyors license and he and Ilene moved to Kimberly B.C. where he worked for the B.C. Forest Service. They returned to the Lower Mainland in 1955 when Art was hired by the City of Burnaby.

Art’s dedication to public health and service inspired him to join the Greater Vancouver Sewerage & Drainage District in 1957.   Art retired as Chief Engineer of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (now Metro Vancouver) in 1989, leaving the legacy of clean drinking water enjoyed by Metro Vancouver residents today. Art also accepted overseas projects to improve water conditions in Ghana, Cambodia and Thailand, working for the World Health Organization and the Asian Development Bank.  Art and Ilene retired to Osoyoos in 1990 and continued to serve the community through the Osoyoos United Church.

Art was predeceased by his parents, Charles and May, and his twin brother James.   He will be ever-fondly remembered and deeply missed.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday April 11, 2015 at the Osoyoos United Church (7814 Spartan Dr.)  followed by a reception.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association, #104-1456 St. Paul Street, Kelowna, B.C. V1Y 2E6

Dear Irene and family
I was so sad to read of Art’s passing. My sincere condolences to you and your family at this sad time. Art will be missed and remembered by his old school chums. The summer that Art and I batched together up at Powel River while we were at UBC has always been a pleasant memory for me. With love, Bob Vincent

Ilene and family – have just read of Art’s passing and am so saddened by this. Art was a real go getter, dedicated, and a great supporter of the OLWQS in Osoyoos. He had great accomplishments and you will all have wonderful memories to cherish always. He was so very proud of his loving wife and family. Those of us who knew him will remember him with thanks that he crossed paths with us.
