Barbara Race

May 6, 1939 - January 21, 2019

Tribute

On Monday, January 21, 2019, Mrs. Barbara Sutcliffe Race of Oliver passed away peacefully at Sunnybank Centre after a long illness at the age of 79 years.

She was predeceased by her parents Tom and Agnes Roe and brother Matt Roe.

Barb will be fondly remembered by her loving family including husband Ernie Race of 58 years; sons Jon Race and Phil Race (Jan) as well as grandchildren Franki and Brett.

Barb trained in England as a school teacher before coming to Canada in 1960 and taught in the NWT, Yukon and other parts of BC before settling in Oliver in 1977 where Barb and Ernie ran a couple of businesses. Barb and Ernie spent their first seventeen years (1960 – 1977) in Canada living in seven different mining towns in the NWT, Yukon and BC. While on a family vacation travelling through the Okanagan in 1970, Barb and Ernie decided Oliver was where they wanted to end up. Seven years later they arrived for good, spending the next 42 years here.

Over the years, Barb volunteered with the Lady Lions, the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift shop, hosted Japanese exchange students, loved knitting hats, toques, scarfs and mittens for church groups to distribute to children in need and volunteered in Mexico feeding the needy.

Barb enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, curling, travelling and golf, including the ever elusive hole-in-one that is still eluding Ernie.

Donations are gratefully accepted for Freemasons’ Cancer Car Program.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday February 2, 2019 at the Oliver Elks Hall.

From: Andrew McGibbon
Relation: I worked for Ernie, Barb and Phil when I was a teenager.

The world has lost a true gem. I worked for Barb, Ernie and Phil in the mid 80’s at E and B Grocery. When I moved on, Barb handed me a letter. She said “I hope this helps you with your future endeavors. Ernie and I wish you nothing but good luck!”. I wasn’t sure what it was but opened it as soon as I was around the corner, out of sights way, on the side street of the Imperial Bank of Commerce. Barb had written me a fantastic letter of recommendation…….one of which I still have to this day. To: Ernie, John, Phil and families, I am very sorry for your loss.

From: Kathy Sabyan
Relation: Family friend

Dear Phil and Family, my true condolences. Barb was such a sweetheart. I worked with her at the drugstore, and as anyone who knew her would feel, she was such a kind and generous lady. I hope I can make it to honor her, but if I can’t, please know my thought are with you all.

I knew Barb & Ernie when they had the laundromat uptown. They were so helpful and Barb always had a kind word for me whenever I ran into her. Saw her often at the Thrift Store too. She was a wonderful person and she will be greatly missed. To Ernie and their family, my deepest condolences.

Relation: Longtime friend

Barbara was the epitome of a lady – kind, gentle, loving, thoughtful, and generous.Always fun-loving. Whenever we went golfing and our ball landed close to the hole, she’d pick it up and say, “that’s a gimme”. I’ve known Barb for many years, have had many fun times with her and Ernie and I will miss her so much. Love and prayers to you Ernie, Phil and Jon.

Dear Ernie, Jon and Phil,

I wanted to send you a note as my dad had let me know Barb passed away. The news made both myself and Claire so sad, the world has lost a beautiful person. I have such fond memories of Barb and although the times we saw each other were too few and far between these are filled with such fun, energy and a lust for life.

It makes me smile to remember how Barb and my grandma Nora get on so well, they just loved to travel, explore and get to know people. They fed off each other’s energy and were like giddy little kids again.

I have such find memories of when I came to visit you all in Okanagan, you made it such fun and was great to see how you made such a beautiful home. Barb had so many things lined up to do and took such joy to show all of the fantastic areas you live near. If I could have a family home environment half as good as the one Barb and Ernie created, then I would be a lucky person.

I really loved receiving emails from Barb, letting us know what had been happening and how the family were. She was such a great writer and managed to put all of her energy onto those written words, I really cherished them and have been looking back on these.

Whilst this is a time of sadness, when I think of Barb, all I can do is smile. Her joy and energy will live on in our memories.

All our love Paul, Claire, Cerys and Bump
