Bart De Melo

December 6, 1920 - February 4, 2015

The family of Bartolomeu Pereira de Melo announce with great sadness, the passing of their father, uncle, and grandfather at the age of 94. Bartolomeu (Bart) is survived by his children George and (Olinda) De Melo, Lucy and (Tim) Riley, Teresa and (Andrew) Hiob; his grandchildren Dan (Megan) Demelo, George Jr. (Shannon) Demelo, Devin, Rachel, Ryan, Paige, Liam and Carter; and great-grand daughters Brittany, Kelsey, Kiera and Kaia.

Bart was born in Sao Caetano, Pico, Azores, Portugal, December 6, 1920. One of 12 children born to Manuel Perreira and Joaquina Melo, Bart spent some time in the military and enjoyed working in a pharmacy in the city of Madalena, Pico before marrying his first sweetheart Maria de Lourdes Rosa in 1948. Tragically, Bart became a widowed father at an early age and faced a life of uncertainty with his young son George until God blessed him with another sweetheart, Leonor Serpa da Silva.  Bart, together with young George, immigrated to Canada in 1964, shortly followed by Leonor.  They were married in Oliver in September of 1965.

Bart will be most remembered for being a loving husband, father (Pai), grandpa (Avo),  uncle (Tio) and friend. Many remember him for his wine making skills, guitar playing, handy-man skills, large gatherings of family and friends and his love of conversation, including many stories filled with jokes and laughter.

A special thank you to Dr. Mark Hamilton, and the staff at Sunnybank Centre for your wonderful care of our father and grandfather.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, February 14 at 10:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church with prayers taking place the night before, Friday, February 13 at 7:00 pm.

Going to miss you, Tio Bart. I loved the fact that one of the 12 was still around. Remembering those early days when you arrived in 1964 to reside at “Sparks Cabins.” It was a privilege to assist you with language, paperwork and shopping. You always had an optimistic smile on your face.
Adeus querido Tio – sua sobrinha Margarida
