Tribute
On Thursday October 20, 2011, Mrs. Betty Jane Smith of Penticton, peacefully passed away at the age of 88 years after a long illness. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Elizabeth and son in law David; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kara (Kelly), Michael (Naomi, Oliver and Thomas) Graham (Melissa, Samuel and Christina); her sister Shirley and her brother Richard as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Betty was a very respected and well loved teacher for forty two years, starting in a small Manitoba country school and retiring in 1983 after teaching grade one for twenty-seven years in Penticton.
Over the years Betty was very involved in the community. She canvassed for the Cancer Society, was an Ironman volunteer, Square Dance jamboree volunteer and a long time member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. Betty enjoyed antiquing, gardening, knitting, and playing cards with her loyal bridge group. She was especially proud of her many friends and family members, especially her grandchildren, and loved spending time with them.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society will be gratefully accepted.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday October 27, 2011 at the Penticton United Church. A reception will follow at the church.
The family would like to thank the staff at Lakeside Care Residence for the wonderful care and professional support they gave to Betty during her time there. Condolences and tributes may be directed by contacting the family.
