Beverley Stanich

July 18, 1934 - January 1, 2022

Tribute

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Beverley Stanich at the age of 87. Bev was born in Merritt to James and Mildred Logan but primarily grew up in Princeton where she met the love of her life, Frank Stanich. They married in 1954 and lived in Princeton, Greenwood and Manning Park before settling in Merritt in 1962. Bev passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver.

Bev was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Frank, in 2004. She is survived by her two daughters, Lyrae Lehtonen (Leo) and Kareen Stanich (Doyle Allpress); three granddaughters, Caitlyn Atkinson (Jim), Teryn Parker (Brad) and Kelsey LePard; four great-grandchildren, Hannah, Amelia, Lincoln and Becca; five step-grandchildren, Cheryl, Mike, Shaun, Dustin (Beverly) and Corey (Darlene); five step-great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Weston, Abigail, Brody and Ryan; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Bev was an avid cook, gardener and crafter who loved to share her baked goods, fruits, vegetables, canning, jams and crafts with all her friends and family. You could stop by her home anytime for coffee and a muffin, if you were sick or shut-in some baking would magically appear on your doorstep and it was a treasure to receive one of her hand-made cards. In 2008, Bev won the Miracle Grow national contest for in-ground gardens.

Most of all Bev enjoyed being a volunteer. She truly believed in community spirit and was a member of the Nicola Valley Women’s Institute from 1959 until 2016 when it had to fold, the Patricia Rebekah Lodge #33 from 1962 to present and the Merritt Senior Citizens Association. Bev was the Lifeline Coordinator in Merritt for 12 years and participated in many other charitable activities that contributed to downtown beautification, the Red Cross loan cupboard, Fall Fair Society, the hospital, etc. In 1992 Bev was honoured as Merritt Citizen of the Year.

The family want to acknowledge the wonderful care provided over the years by Dr. Vandermerwe and Dr. Goetz and give special thanks to Dr. McIntyre and all the staff at SOGH who cared for Bev in her final days. A Celebration of Life and urn interment will take place in Merritt at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Bev to the Parkinson Society British Columbia at https://www.parkinson.bc.ca/donate/

Condolences to all the family. This is so sad and even though I have not seen Beverly in years, she was always special to me and my family!

From: Kathy Neale
Relation: Grandma’s friend

Our family loved Bev, she will be greatly missed. She and my grandma(May Matthias) were friends for years. Bev helped her out all the time when Grandma aged. Lovely generous and caring lady.

Our deepest condolences from Tom Matthias and Kathy and Doug Neale.

I did not know your mom well but she was an inspiration to me. As a Home Care nurse in Merritt for 35 years I would often see her walking with her brisk determined stride going around the neighbourhood delivering goodies to those less fortunate. She once told me the secret was to listen to CBC radio instead of watching soap operas! She made a huge difference to our community and I’m sure her loss will be felt deeply.

I lived across the street from Bev for years. Her yard was beautiful, I saw her often out weeding on her hands and knees and mowing her own lawn up until the last year in her home. She always walked at a fast pace like she had a mission and I am sure she did…may she rest in peace

We are sending our deepest condolences to the family. In 2000, we moved to our house on Merritt Avenue and met Bev soon after, because she was taking care of her mom who lived across the street from us. Bev Kindly shared some perennial plants from her amazing gardens, as well as some gardening tips when we started work on our yard. The way she cared for her home and yard was truly an inspirational. Bev often waved to us on her frequent walks uptown, sometimes stopping for a chat. She will greatly missed and always remembered.

Bev was such a generous and kind lady. I managed to show this to my dad LaRae & Kareen.
Our hearts & thoughts are with you, knowing that you treasured your time with your mom.
Take care with all of the challenges that just keep coming.
The photo is my dad playing pool with Quinn, the youngest grandson yesterday at the Winfield Seniors Lodge.. ( too big to upload)

Truly a kind and caring lady with such a fantastic yard, she could grow anything. I helped care for her yard one summer and was treated to tea and cookies.
