On Wednesday, June 20, 2018, Mr. Bruce Alexander Johnston of Oliver passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age of 62 years.
Bruce was born in Fillmore, Saskatchewan and is predeceased by parents William (Bill) and Mary Johnston.
Bruce will be fondly remembered by his loving family including life partner Georgina (George) Hitchie and her children Tracey (Bob) and Trevor (Roxanne); siblings: Audrey (Eldon) Piper and their children Scott (Laura) and family, Lyle (Andrea) and family, Ryan (Tricia) and family; Raymond (Shirley Bowles) and his children Shelley Ziola and family, Kim (Richard) Beaune and Mark Johnston; Beverley Johnston (Doug Campbell) and her son Bryan (Mary); family friend Graham Ferguson as well as many extended family and friends.
Bruce worked in the hotel industry in Saskatchewan and Alberta. In the early 2000’s, he was diagnosed with the debilitating and incurable disease called Cerebellar Ataxia. Poor health eventually led to early retirement to Oliver in the Okanagan. In 2014 Bruce fought and beat cancer and he remained cancer free until recently. This time, unfortunately the cancer won. However, Bruce maintained his indomitable spirit, wit and wonderful sense of humor until the end. He will be missed by all those who knew him.
Donations are gratefully accepted for the Canadian Cancer Society in Bruce’s memory.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Peter Entwistle, the nurses and staff at the Oliver Health Centre for their caring and consideration as well as the staff of Day Surgery in Penticton and the Cancer Clinic in Kelowna.

My memories of Bruce are from fun times at family gatherings. I believe I stopped in to check out his hotel once with my parents, and I have a memory of Curtis & I hanging out with Bruce & George on Auntie Kay’s deck. I didn’t know Bruce well, but I remember him as kind, friendly, and happy.
