Derek Poucher

July 8, 1944 - November 6, 2017

Tribute

On Monday, November 6, 2017, Mr. Derek Alan Poucher (Big D) of Osoyoos passed away peacefully at McKinney Place Extended Care at the age of 73 years.

Predeceased by parents Herman and Sylvia, and brothers Keith (Jacquie) and Ramsay (Sharon).

Survived by his loving wife Maureen, sons Alan, Tim and Stephen (Shanelle) and their mother Jill Legge, grandsons Liam and Owen, stepsons Robert and Peter McBeth, and many nieces and nephews.

Derek worked in sales until he retired.

Maureen & Derek travelled to Mexico, Florida, & California. A favourite vacation was to drive around BC trying new golf courses. They took all of the sons to Disneyland, and went group camping with friends on Vancouver Island for several years.

Derek was active at the Osoyoos senior Centre, serving on the Board in the 2 years before he became ill with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2014.

He was very fond of sports. Played golf, rugby and cricket in England, slow-pitch and golf in Canada. He and Maureen joined the Osoyoos Golf Club in 2009 after moving to Osoyoos from North Delta.

His sense of humour and happy spirit made everyone laugh, and he was Maureen’s rock for 31 years.

Donations gratefully accepted for the BC Cancer Agency.

Please lift a glass in Derek’s memory.  A celebration of life will be held on the Coast in the spring.

Maureen – our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Derek was a fighter and has been with us far longer than expected. We have wonderful memories of sharing laughs, hugs and a few golf shots with him.

Derek was a great friend to us both. Always laughing, never complaining, even in these last challenging years. We are sad that he is no longer by your side Maureen, but rejoice that he is now at peace. Praying for peace for you as you find the ‘new normal’

From: Helgi and Peter Leesment
Relation: Long time friend of widow, also long time friend of couple.

Derek led a happy life with you. You did everything possible, and then some, to make his last years as comfortable as reasonable. You have been in our thoughts for a long time already and our thoughts will continue with you now.

Dear Maureen,
It’s hard to find words to comfort you at the loss of your husband but thinking of you with sympathy and understanding gives you strength especially at this time.
Blessings to you and your family.

Dear Maureen and all Derek’s family,
I am so sorry to hear of Derek’s passing to this outrageous disease! He was too young to go and deserved to enjoy so much more of his Autumn years.
While the pain of his loss will be difficult for a time……it will ease down the road.
Derek was a very fine man. A kind Man, a respectful Man who loved life.
Many will remember him with pleasure and fondness.

From: Jamie D Hoare
Relation: I grew up across the street in North Delta and spent a lot of time with his whole family.

Heartbroken to read this. You and Derek were such a big part of my childhood and I will always remember the kindness and joi de vivre that he radiated every day. His infectious smile will never fade from my memories.

My most affectionate condolences to you, Maureen, and your whole family. Heaven gained another beautiful soul when Derek passed. The only comfort I can give is to believe that he’s now amongst some of his closest friends, youthful again and no longer burdened with his earthly struggles.
