Don Chadderton

February 27, 1930 - October 25, 2012

Tribute

Don Chadderton died peacefully at age 82.  He is survived by Donna, his loving wife of 58 years; also by his daughters, Anne Hildebrand, Jody Chadderton (Tom Makowichuk) and Jill Fisher and grandchildren, Jaimie Hildebrand, Ben Hildebrand, Devon Fisher and Linnea Munro.

Don had a long and successful banking career, joining The Canadian Bank of Commerce (later CIBC) in Victoria in 1949.

He met Donna Munro in Junior High and they married in 1954.  Together they moved around the province as Don advanced his career.  They lived in Nelson, Duncan, Kamloops, Salmo, Coquitlam, Vancouver and Vanderhoof.  Their final long-distance transfer with CIBC took them back to the Vancouver area.  They bought a home in North Vancouver where they stayed for 28 years.

Don took early retirement from CIBC in 1988.  But he didn’t stay retired.  After about a year he became a CIBC mobile retirement specialist, a role he enjoyed until 1997 when he retired again and moved to Osoyoos.

Don embraced this community, offering his volunteer time and energy to St. Christopher’s Anglican Church, the Elks, Osoyoos Museum Society, Osoyoos Desert Society, Osoyoos Senior Centre Association and OSS breakfast program.  He was also active in the Arthritis support group and the Parkinson’s support group in Osoyoos.  Don’s generous community support earned him the Osoyoos Times Man of the Year award in 2000.

Don was passionate about gardening, (particularly his award-winning dahlias,) photography, Disneyland and cruise ship travel.  He told the same jokes for decades and was known for his laugh and his humour as well as his Tilley pants and vest and his bright yellow jacket and shoes.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov.3rd at 2 pm at the Osoyoos Senior Centre.

My father was a very special man and he gave me many happy memories growing up. He took my friends and I swimming at the North Shore Rec Centre after dinner, he would show off his roller skating skills at the Stardust Roller Rink, and he chaperoned several bus/tenting trips with high school students.
When my son was little, and I was only feeding him home pureed vegetables and tofu, Dad would line up Goldfish crackers for him along the arm of his chair. He thought it was funny the way Devon would grab them and eat them. Dad said he could spoil him because he was the Papa.
Dad taught me about hard work, giving back to the community and managing money. All things that have helped me in life.
When a friend in high school would phone and ask for me, Dad would always ask, “Jill who?” and then laugh and laugh – seriously, every time.
Dad was always quick with a smile and warm handshake. “My name’s Chad, I guess you know yours” was what he would usually say.
I will miss him and I am so grateful that I had him as a father.

Numbers 6:24-26

The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make his face to shine upon you,
and be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up his countenance upon you,
and give you shalom.”

We were saddened to hear of the loss of such a kind and dear man. Don and Donna were such a wonderful couple and they always brightened our day on Thursdays when they’d arrive for their lunch. It was such a treat for all of us to see their smiles and listen to a joke or two and have the Hugs. This man endeared himself in a way no one else could. He’ll be so missed by our family at Smitty’s as well as our own family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you on the loss you all are feeling. Hope knowing that others care will be of help in the days and years ahead. May God Bless all of you. The Herle Family

Donna, Jody and family
I am truly sorry for your loss. Don was a man with a heart of gold and a soul to match! He would always brighten up my day with one of his quirky jokes which I loved so much. Or even when he came to visit me at work when he brought in the staples button that he pushed and it said “that was easy” Well saying goodbye is not so easy so I will just say see you later. He was a truly great man and I am one lucky person to have known him.
