Douglas Walmsley
May 17, 1938 - March 20, 2022
Tribute
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Douglas James Walmsley, a resident of Oliver, British Columbia, on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at the age of 83 years.
Doug was born to Virginia and William Walmsley on May 17, 1938. He was one of six children and grew up in Cranbrook, BC.
Doug married Morag Ellen Symington on August 3, 1963 and joined the Canadian Air Force the same year. This started their love of travel and adventure with their first home in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan followed by Germany, Italy, Chilliwack BC, Trenton Ontario, Comox BC, Churchill Manitoba, Cold Lake Alberta, Borden Ontario with his last posting in Wainwright Alberta before moving to the farm in Gundy near Dawson Creek BC and finally to Oliver BC.
Doug loved to say he had an international family with his wife born in Malaya, oldest son born in Germany, daughter born in Italy and youngest son born in Canada.
Doug leaves his loving family: wife Morag Walmsley, sons Bill (Bonnie) Walmsley, Colin (Keri) Walmsley, daughter Jacqui (Fred) Burton, his brothers Tom Walmsley, Gordon (Joan) Walmsley and sisters Doreen (Doug) Rooney and Diane Johnson, grandchildren Heather (Clinton) Stratuliak, Cajun Bardgett, Brynn and Ash/Rowan Walmsley, great grandchildren Jaleena and Hela Bardgett and knowing he had twin great grandsons coming soon, as well as many extended family and friends too numerous to mention.
Doug was predeceased by his parents and brother John Walmsley and his wife Eleanor, brother-in-law Barry Johnson and sister-in-law Alice Walmsley.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Doug will be interred with his parents in the Oliver Municipal Cemetery on Aug. 25, 2022.

Doug Walmsey was a kind of man who in years past, you would have called a Gentleman.
He was full of humour and took pleasure in sending us by email a joke or humourus tale that both Diane and I enjoyed. We always looked forward to that version of “You’ve got Mail.” During his retirement, his adventures into genealogy and the past history of the Symington family led him to many discoveries, especially the account of Morag’s dad, Colin Symington’s escape from the Japanese in Malaya during the second world war. It makes riveting reading.
We will miss you Doug!

Uphill (A dialogue if you will)
Does the road wind uphill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day’s journey take the whole day long?
From morning to night my friend.
But is there, for the night, a resting place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that Inn.
Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I knock, . . or call when just in sight?
They will not keep you waiting at that door.
Shall I find comfort travel-sore and weak?
Of labour, . . you shall find the sum.
Will there be beds for me, and all who seek?
Yes, . . Beds for all who come. Christina Rossetti
