Elizabeth Ann Fairbrother

February 6, 1949 - May 19, 2023

Tribute

It is with great sadness and a profound sense of loss that we share the passing of Elizabeth Ann Fairbrother on May 19th at the age of seventy-four. Her death was a result of complications from a short but intense battle with dementia.

As a life partner, mother, grandmother, friend, colleague, and teacher, Liz shared her joy and lived her life with energy, love, commitment, passion, and grace. Her greatest happiness and source of pride was her family – her husband Dave, her children and their partners; Kara, Michael and Naomi, and Graham and Melissa, eight grandchildren, Christina, Oliver, Sam, Thomas, Matthew, Chloe, Willow, Lily, and close cousins Vicki and Alexis and her uncle Richard.

Liz was a lifelong teacher beginning at age twenty-two and working well past retirement age to sixty-seven. Her love for her students and the great satisfaction and pride she got from her profession as an educator burned bright her whole career. She especially had a place in her heart for those children who struggled and needed more love and support to manage and learn and was a committed and forceful advocate for children with special needs.

Liz loved to camp, work in her garden, spend time with her grandchildren, read, and walk, and in an earlier life was a runner, quilter, sewer, weaver and crafter, and an avid amateur geologist. She loved her dinner glass of wine and a rich caramel macchiato. Liz’s beautiful smile, sense of fun and humour, quick wit, measured irreverence, and dedication to her family and friends was evident in everything she did. She was serious, but never took herself too seriously.

Liz hated the disease that tormented her until her passing and we know she has an incredible feeling of relief and tranquility to be finally rid of it. Instead of flowers or gifts, she would want any donations you felt appropriate to be directed to the Penticton Alzheimer’s Society in the hope that there might soon be a cure for this debilitating disease and that one day others might not have to suffer through it as she did.
You can find the link to donate at https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en/help-support/find-support-bc/interior-region

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, July 23, 2023,  at Park Drive Church, 6570 Park Drive Oliver B.C.
