Elroy Pankratz

April 9, 1936 - February 7, 2020

Tribute

Elroy Alexander Pankratz was born in Mountain Lake, Minnesota on April 9, 1936 to Anna (nee Duerksen) and Alexander Pankratz, being the youngest of 7 children.  At 83 years of age, Elroy passed peacefully at Westview Place in Penticton, BC on February 7, 2020 surrounded by his wife and family.

Elroy is survived by his wife Nancy and their four children: Myrna Van Cleave (Timothy) of Pendleton, Oregon; Myron Pankratz (Nicole) of Penticton, BC; Mark Pankratz (Raë) of Penticton, BC; and Myleen Mallach (Jay) of Okanagan Falls, BC.  Elroy was blessed with 19 grandchildren: Darren (Rachel), Matthew (Christina), Nathan (Alyssa), Kristen (Collins), Daniel, Bethany, Meagan (Simeon), Taylor, Alyssa, Hannah, Sidney, Austin (Chantal), Jasper, Madison, Oakley, Isabella, A.L., Zoe and Denzer.  Elroy was also blessed with three great grandchildren: Shantel, Wesley and Hudson.  He is also survived by his sister Esther, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Elroy graduated from Northwest College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he majored in Bible and Missions, and was later ordained as a Minister.  He also became a Journeyman Carpenter and started his own business called Kingsmen Construction, building numerous homes in the Vancouver area and the South Okanagan.  Elroy loved gardening, birds, wildlife, hiking, camping and travelling adventures.

After meeting Nancy at a Summer Bible Camp on Thetis Island, BC, he married her on June 14, 1960. They worked for numerous years as missionaries, serving the Indigenous Peoples of BC, from remote coastal villages to the Interior.  Elroy moved his family to the Vancouver area, then to Rendell Creek Ranch, and then settled in Oliver, where he became the Pastor of Antioch Bible Fellowship and the Principal of Antioch Christian Academy. Upon his retirement, Elroy developed and followed his passion for the people of Africa.  He worked with “Home of Hope”, a child-focused, church-based, non-profit organization.  Elroy constructed church buildings, along with ministering to pastors, widows and orphans through 10 different mission trips to Rwanda, Congo and Kenya.

Elroy unconditionally loved and fully accepted everyone he met. He held an unwavering faith and lifelong commitment to serving God in every way he could and in everything he did. Elroy’s eternal optimism was contagious, as was his huge smile, showing his loving, caring and giving nature.  Elroy also had a sense of humour with his somewhat silly, but wise, little quotes he shared. Everyone who met Elroy highly respected him and always appreciated his prayers and support. Elroy truly lived his entire life with the utmost integrity!

A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Concordia Lutheran Church, located at 2800 South Main Street, Penticton, BC.  The service will be livestreamed on Facebook for those unable to attend.  A reception with family and friends will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be given to “Home of Hope” for the projects close to Elroy’s heart: The Kariobangi Rescue Center in Kenya and the Children’s Feeding Programs in Rwanda and Congo. Tax receipts will be given for gifts over $15.  www.homeofhope.ca/elroy

From: Ronald Higginbotham
Relation: Fellow missionary

My wife and I joined NAIM in 1968 as summer missionaries. We were assigned to work under Elroy an Nancy. They were great models for us. We learned a lot from them and were impacted by their love for others, Elroy’s strong faith and his ministry skills. We served with NAIM for 30 years and for the past 21 years have used much if that training in ministry with college students in Bellingham, Washington.
I trust God’s faithful comfort and care of Nancy and the family. Love, Ron

From: Rose Alderson
Relation: Friend of Myleen

Hugs to you and your family Myleen. I can relate, having lost both parents, that it’s a hard time. It sounds as though you have a big family to lean on at this tough time. Be kind to yourself and cut yourself a bit of slack. Big Hugs, Rose

Dear Nancy and Family, it is with tender memories and sad hearts we write to you today. How we would have loved to have seen Elroy one more time. Sorry we will not able to come on Sunday but our prayers will be with you and we will follow on FB. A big hug to you Nancy!

Elroy was larger than life. We met him in 1970 on Thetis Island, then worked in Merritt together for summers with the people we both loved. His big infectious smile and personality drew you right in. His confidence and courage and ready to do whatever the situation called for – whether it was grab a hockey stick and play with the guys or a guitar and just start singing – he would do!!

We can picture him now dancing and singing and praising JESUS, the One he lived for, and looking forward to his family – all of you and those precious little grands – all joining him one day.

Well done thou good and faithful Servant, Elroy Pankratz, well done, enter into your rest and joyfully give praise to the One you served so faithfully all of your days.

From: john edward galbraith
Relation: Long ago acquaintance. Now that he is gone I wish I could have known him beter

To Nancy and family – on a rare visit to the Oliver newspaper I found news of Elroy’s passing and I want to send you at this late date my sincere sympathy for his loss. I have never known anyone like Elroy in my entire life and as time passes I remember his unconditional love for everyone. His influence and blessing on others will continue on, farther than you will ever know and than he could have imagined. I wish comfort for you in knowing that he was an amazing man of God whose loss cannot be underestimated. The world has need of more Elroy, and is poorer for his absence.

From: Joan and Bob Burrows
Relation: Colleagues in ministry in 1960-62

60 years ago we had the privilege of taking Elroy and Nancy from Vancouver on the mission boat Thomas Crosby IV to their new home in Bella Bella. We had several visits with them over the next couple of years. Then our paths separated – but ever since, whenever I use Nancy’s recipe for oatmeal cookies, I think about them. We have wondered about their lives since then, and finally realized we could “search the net”. So, belatedly, we learned of Elroy’s recent death. We send our sympathy to Nancy and the family, and would really appreciate getting in touch with Nancy again. Please send her our good wishes and ask us if she would phone us at 604-224-5136. Thank you.
