Ely Gus Sherbinin

September 16, 1935 - February 24, 2012

Tribute

Gus (Ely) Sherbinin, beloved husband, brother, grandfather and father passed away on February 24, 2012 at the age of 76 years old. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Daphne; his daughters Cindy (Jim) Liebel, Susan (Rod) Rutherford and he is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Tyler & Amanda Liebel, Sara Liebel & Jenn Austin, and Derek Liebel. Gus was also a treasured brother, uncle, and friend who contributed greatly to the community. Gus is lovingly remembered by his brother George (Maxine); he is predeceased by his sister Tania (Don) Owens, his brother Johnny and his parents Helen and John Sherbinin. He is a long time resident of Midway with many years of contribution towards the community. His many contributions spanned from avid community club member (he was instrumental in the construction of the local community center) to auxiliary policeman, he was an ambulance attendant for many years, plus he was an integral part of organizing and staging the Midway Rodeo. His career began at the family business at Boundary Sawmills where he and his family made a strong contribution to the region. Later Gus owned, and operated (where he sat on a pop case gathering the local gossip) the local Esso station. The family are eternally grateful for all the support of Dr. Ooi, Willy Kakuno and many other friends of the community for all their assistance. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Gus” life that will be held at the Midway Community Centre on Friday, March 2nd at 1 pm. The family wishes that any requests for contributions/cheques be made to the Kettle Bursary and Scholarship Society for either the Mike Downing Scholarship or the Kakuno Scholarship. Contributions can be sent to Leslie Walker, Box 436, Midway BC V0H 1M0.

Dear Daphne and family:

I extend my deepest sympathies to you on your loss.
My first memories of Gus are of him driving with me from Grand Forks to Midway, his hometown, when I started teaching in Grand Forks. He was a student at the high school here and I travelled to my mother’s in Midway on weekends. Of course, I have known Daphne for years, as well, and know how dedicated you have been to my home church of St. Jude’s, in Greenwood.
Best regards,
Betty Talarico

From: Doug Butterworth
Relation: Former Customer

To all Gus’s family: I had the privledge of being one of Gus’s main customers when he was the sales manager of Boundary Sawmills in the 60’s. I always found him very fair and astute in his dealings and along with George did much to promote the lumber industry in B.C.

From: Fred Soukoreff

It was sad to read of the passing of Eli Sherbinin. My father worked for Boundaray Sawmills and even I had a summer job there one year. I especially remember Eli when he attended Grade 12 at the same time as I in Grand Forks. My deepest condolences to the family.

From: Peter Hadikin
Relation: Uncle

I would like to pass on my heart felt sympathy to all of your family in the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. I was fortunate to have a chance to see Gus recently during a stop in Grand Forks for lunch with my mom and my sister Marlene. I have many memories of Gus and the time I spend playing ball for the team that Gus coached those many years ago.

I hope you are able to quickly get over your hurt and spend your time recollecting special memories.

All my best to you during this difficult time, Peter
