Tribute

Evelyn Ida Stolen passed away peacefully in McKinney Place, Oliver with family present at the age of 89.  She was born in Athabasca, Alta. on October 8, 1929 to Harvey & Ida Cull. Her life and career paths took her to many places & varied occupations. She attended Seattle University and married Demetrios (Jimmy) Michael in Kentucky, U.S.A. in 1952. She started her career arranging flowers and later, as a teacher, she taught grades 1 & 2, as well as special needs children.  Evelyn and Jimmy divorced, and she married Ivor Stolen, but spent most of her later years single.  She delved in cooking while working at a drive-in theatre in Vancouver, but later moved to the Okanagan.  After retirement, Evelyn owned and operated Rainbow Daycare in Osoyoos, taught at Okanagan College and operated ‘Grandma’s Pantry’ in an Osoyoos laundromat.  From a wheelchair, her entrepreneur skills then changed to own & operate Casa de Jasmine Bed & Breakfast with the help of family. Her last venture was to work & socialize (which she loved) at the Oliver Flea Market, with the help of her grandson Erik, where she made many friends.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Costas (Gus) Michael (wife Carol), and daughter Eleni Hirt, along with grandchildren, Heidi, Harley and Erik.

To some, she was called ‘Mom’, to many she was a friend who will be missed. Evelyn had a long full life that touched so many people.

Her wishes were to be cremated with a celebration of life to follow in the spring/summer of 2019.
