CARVALHO, Gabriel de Lima
(1933 – 2010)
Of Oliver, BC, passed away on March 24, 2010 surrounded by family at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age of 77 years.
He was predeceased by his parents Manuel de Lima Carvalho and Antonia de Jesus Pacheco; seven brothers and two sisters all of Portugal.
Gabriel will be fondly remembered by his loving wife Maria Dionilde Carvalho; children Oliveria (Jack) Loureiro, Eulalia (Daniel) Moura and John (Raquel) Carvalho; grandchildren Stacy (Colleen) Loureiro, Matthew Loureiro, Antonio (Alicia) Moura, Amanda and Christopher Carvalho; great-grandchildren Nathan (Stacy) Loureiro, Matthew (Amanda) Carvalho and Logan (Antonio) Moura.
Gabriel was a self-employed orchardist. He loved animals, growing fruit and grapes, making wine, Portuguese sausage, sweet bread (masa) and bean chilli to share with his family and friends. He was the happiest when his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were around him. His faith and involvement in his church were very important to him.
Over the years Gabriel was involved with the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Spirit organization and the Fatima organization. He also greatly enjoyed his time spent with the Seniors Centre, the Portuguese Club and the Oliver Legion.
A funeral mass was held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday March 29 at Christ the King Catholic Church, with celebrant Father Sebastian Puthenpura. Prayers were offered on the evening of Sunday March 28. Gabriel was laid to rest in the Oliver Municipal cemetery. A reception followed the committal in the lower church hall.

The family of the late Gabriel Carvalho would like to thank Palliative Care, Life Line, home support and home care and their wonderful staff who took such great care of Dad as well as The Cancer Lodge and Cancer Clinic in Kelowna and Dr. Mohamed in Kelowna. A very special thank you to Dr. Myslek and her staff, all the staff at the South Okanagan General Hospital and to John Nunes and Daryn Pottinger and staff at Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service.

I met Gabriel many years ago as we were both orchardists, and over the years to follow, I sold potatoes to him for many years from Anderson’s potatoe farm up on the Reserve. I even ran into him again when he was involved with the pig farm in Rock Creek- we talked orchards, family and general chit chat, but Gabriel was always smiling and I found him to be a very pleasant man to deal with and have for a friend- I will miss him, even though I haven’t seen him for sometime- our condolences to all of you his family and may our God be with you through this Easter season and in your time of grief…Jim and Barb MacNaughton, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
