George Percival MacDougall
January 12, 1927 – October 27, 2009
Aged 82 years
Passed at SOGH in his beloved Oliver after a fairly brief illness from pancreatic cancer.
Predeceased by his father George Sr, his mother Nora, sister Charlotte, niece Cindy, and life-long friend Stan Marrington.
Survived by his loving wife and best friend Helen, daughter and son-in-law Linda and Bill Unwin, grandchildren Chris (Jenny) Gillis, Jennifer Pottie, James Pottie, and Rob Unwin; brothers Bill (Lil) and Duncan (Anne); sisters Nora Reed and Pat (Norm) Campbell; many nieces, nephews, and “adopted” nieces and nephews who all loved him as a second father; and six great-grandchildren, Samantha, Kassandra, Sarah, Tristan, Ashleigh, and Adrianna.
George was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and came to BC when he was 15 years old. His father was in the Canadian Navy and George joined the Canadian Army in 1944 when he was 17. He was a furniture frame-maker and was co-owner in a custom furnishings business, Western Designers Upholstery, in Vancouver, BC.
He was an active, very involved member of the Royal Canadian Legion #179 in Vancouver, where he was awarded a Lifetime Membership in 1976, and belonged to the Army and Navy Club #68. He was a proud supporter of youth sports for many years. He also belonged to the Grandview Legion Golf Club. George loved playing golf and was a member of the Inkameep Canyon Golf Club since 1997, when it was still Cherry Grove.
George will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. A “Celebration of Life” will be held in the upstairs hall of the Oliver Legion on November 14th, 2009, from 2:00 until 4:00 pm. A Memorial Luncheon will be held in the spring of 2010 for those unable to attend the November service.
