Gertrude (Trudy) Weiler

July 2, 1935 - May 2, 2022

Tribute

On Monday May 2, 2022, Mrs. Gertrude (Trudy) R. Weiler of Oliver passed away peacefully at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age 86 years.  She was predeceased by her parents John and Mary Luthy and brother-in-law David Swanson.  She will be greatly missed by her husband Erwin Weiler.

Trudy will be fondly remembered by her sisters Leony (William) Baldwin and Vreny Swanson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Trudy was a loyal and valuable employee of Canada Post for over 35 years.

She volunteered in the community for many years with the Canadian Cancer Society and was a long-time member of the Eastern Star.

Trudy was a very involved and dedicated member of the Oliver United Church. She was one of four founding people who started the Sunshine Soup Kitchen in the early 1990’s and served on many committees. Trudy was the Oliver United Church choir director and was a respected trustee for many years.

Donations are gratefully accepted for the Canadian Cancer Society.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday July 2, 2022 at the Oliver United Church followed by urn interment and committal at the Oliver Municipal Cemetery. A reception hosted by the Eastern Star at the Oliver Masonic Hall will follow the interment.

The Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service & Crematorium Staff send our condolences to family and friends.

From: Paul and Barbara Eby
Relation: Friend and business.

Erwin, you have our deepest sympathies. We always loved when we saw Trudy. She was always upbeat and excited about what she was doing even when the doing got harder for her. My favourite memory is when she used to call into the radio’s birthday show every day with different Oliver residents’ names. She knew everyone who came through the post office!

From: Verna DeMerchant
Relation: We were school mates as well as both active in the United Church as young people.

Trudy was a wonderful person and Oliver was fortunate to have had her volunteer work.
We were school mates for many years and met now and then after I moved away.
My sincere sympathy to her family. Verna Fleming DeMerchant

Erwin, we are so sorry to hear of Trudy’s passing. She and you were always a delight when you came to the office and we always missed her at the Post Office.

From: Norm Friesen
Relation: A member of her Oliver United Church Choir

Condolences to Trudy’s nearest. As a newly graduated teacher in the fall of 1963, I arrived in Oliver to begin a career at the elementary school knowing no one in the community. An ad in the Oliver Chronicle for a Community Choir drew me. To everyone’s disappointment only a handful of singers appeared. Trudy as director, invited everyone to join her Oliver United Church Choir. I took her up on her offer. It lead to a deep connection to the Oliver community, as well as a life long choir involvement later in Vancouver including St Andrews Wesley. I treasure to this day meeting Trudy as well as the Luthy family. Her irrepressible optimism and bubbling sense of humour ‘we can do this’ despite obstacles – inspirational – Thank-you Trudy!
