Harvey Copeland

May 26, 1924 - September 19, 2021

Tribute

Harvey Copeland passed away peacefully on September 19, 2021 in Osoyoos with family by his side. He was born on May 26, 1924 in Melfort, Saskatchewan where he lived until he moved to Vancouver as a young man. Harvey served with the RCAF in WWII doing 32 missions as a tail gunner before going to Boundary Bay as an instructor. On VJ Day he met the love of his life, Madeline and they were married soon after. He became a watch maker and gold smith while living in Vancouver. After a few years they moved to Prince Rupert where he perfected his skills! In the early 1950’s Harvey and Madeline moved their family to Quesnel. They had heard a rumour that a pulp mill was going to be built and decided that was their opportunity to start a business of their own. They opened Quesnel Jewellers and developed many loyal customers and good friends during the 40+ years it was open. When Harvey wasn’t at his watchmaking bench, he could be found at the golf course, curling rink or enjoying time with his family. He and Madeline enjoyed travelling and spent many winters in Arizona. In 2017 they moved to Osoyoos and enjoyed the milder winters and exploring the new surroundings. Harvey will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul as well as a huge supporter of community programs and sports in Quesnel.

He will be missed immensely by his wife of 75 years, Madeline, sons Bill (Rosemary) and Rick, daughters Terry (Don) Coldwell and Debbie (Tom) MacKenzie, grandchildren Heather (Jeff) Burke, Rob Copeland, Trevor (Terri) Coldwell, Blair (Sarah) Coldwell, Sommer Coldwell, Eric (Mel) MacKenzie and Amber (Rob) MacKenzie-Evans as well as several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

“He didn’t tell us how to live. He lived and let us watch him.”

Relation: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 173 Veterans Visiting Committee.

Carol and I always enjoyed visiting Harvey and Madeline when they lived in Mariposa Gardens. It was a pleasure chatting with Harvey. He had a kind and gentle manner. Harvey would lay the wreath for us at our November 11th ceremony and participated in a number of parades, he was a valued and committed Legion member.
We will miss Harvey and offer our sincere condolences to his wife Madeline and his family.

From: Dolores and Zeke
Relation: An acquaintance of his daughter/

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Debbie and Tom.

From: Marv Schley
Relation: A friend over the many years that he and his family lived in Quesnel

It is with sadness that I learned of Harvey’s passing. Memories of the days that I curled with and against Harvey are still vivid in my memory. Harvey was always a kind and thoughtful person. He never visually showed his displeasure with matters that upset him. When he joined the Seniors’ Curling group in the mornings I felt that I really got to know Harvey more deeply than any of the past 55 years that I knew him. I looked forward to those days in the morning when we could share in past memories of those 55 years. I truly missed those days after he moved away from Quesnel. I wish Madeline and the family the best in their loss of such a great husband and dad.

From: Noel and Glenys Pumfrey
Relation: Like to think we were friends

Madeline and family. We were sorry to hear of Harvey’s passing. We always enjoyed seeing him at the golf course and he was a big supporter of golf with Noel winning several of his nice silver trays! We still wear watches we got at your jewelry store! My parents knew you both through golf, curling and owning businesses in Quesnel. You will have many fond memories together.
