Jean Urcullu
January 18, 1931 - August 7, 2016
Tribute
On Sunday August 7, 2016, Mr. Jean Antoine Urcullu of Oliver passed away peacefully at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age of 85 years.
Jean will be fondly remembered by his loving family including his wife Odette Urcullu of Oliver; daughter Helene Urcullu of Oliver; grandson Dylan Scott of Prince George; sister Therese Palacio of France and brother Réne Urcullu of France.
He first came to Canada in 1957 and then immigrated to Canada from France in 1959 and worked in Northern Ontario as a hand faller for many years.
Jean met Odette in Montreal in 1962 and after a brief courtship they married in 1963. Helene came along in 1965. He became a cab driver in Montreal from 1963 until 1969. After much frustration with the business and living in the city, the family moved west to BC. Once again he picked up his chainsaw and fell trees in the Lumby area until the early 80’s. At that time he became a bucker until his retirement at the age of 62.
He was respected and will be remembered as a hard working, productive man.
During his retirement, he and Odette went on many trips, travelling across Canada, the US and Mexico. His favourite was Yuma. The dry climate and the wonderful people brought joy to his heart.
His passion was fishing, something he shared with Odette and Helene for years. Once Dylan, his grandson was introduced, they went on many fishing trips together creating their own memories. Jean’s other hobby was making wine, something he was very gifted at. His wine brought many people together.
Jean was a man that lived life large, anyone who met him remembered his sense of humour, his kindness and of course his temper. He had a gift of being able to speak to anyone and make them smile and feel special. Jean enjoyed the simple things in life: his family and his friends.
You will be missed Papa.

No more sitting by the evening campfire at Mable Lake.
