John McKay

October 25, 1930 - December 31, 2022

Tribute

On December 31, 2022 Mr. John Donald McKay of Osoyoos passed away at the South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver, BC at the age of 92 years.  He died after a short illness with his family at his side.

He was predeceased by his brother Robert and his sister Mildred.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 72 years, Alma, his children Shirley (Mike), Judy, his grandchildren Stacey (Sam), Tara, James (Rhonda), Justen (Sylvie), Andrea (Anthony), his great grandchildren Devon, Ayden, Alexa, Megan, Liam, Nevaeh, and Ella. His humour and playfulness with his grandchildren and great grandchildren kept him young.

John from a young child had a penchant for making all things work. This helped him in creating a loving family life to his love of mechanics from which he built his career.  He retired from Alcan after 23 years on December 1, 1992 as a foreman in the garage where he was highly regarded for both his ethics and knowledge.

In 1993 he moved to Osoyoos where he attended the Baptist Church making many new friends.  He was a man of strong faith and enjoyed the Christian fellowship.

John was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed ocean fishing, camping, traveling and cruising with family and friends. He loved to explore nature as a rock hobbyist. He was an avid lawn bowler and volunteered for the maintenance of the greens.

We would like to thank Dr. Tarr and the caring nurses of the South Okanagan General Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday March 17, 2023 at the Osoyoos Baptist Church followed by a reception in the church lower hall.

Dear Alma and family I was deeply saddened to hear of John’s passing he will be greatly missed. I want to send my deepest condolences to all of you.

I got to know John and Alma when they lived in Stony Plain Alberta when I married Alma’s sister Erma.
After John and Alma moved to Kitimat BC, we visited them many times and have many happy memories attending Shirley’s and Judy’s weddings, fishing and crab trapping experiences.

When John retired they moved to Osoyoos BC and after visiting them there we moved here as well in 1995. We have had many years of sharing time together, camping, shopping, lawn bowling, family reunions and playing cards together.
May your fond memories and caring support from family and friends help you journey through this difficult time.
