John Zupan

January 26, 1927 - January 15, 2017

Tribute

On January 15, 2017, eleven days before his 90th birthday, John I. Zupan passed peacefully away.

Predeceased by his daughter Evelyn and sister Fani.

John will be fondly remembered by his loving family including spouse Erika, son John (Helene), granddaughters Alphie, Jessica, Allison and Amy and grandsons Peter and Shawn.

A Second World War veteran and long-time resident of Osoyoos, John was born in Cemsenik, Slovenia on January 26, 1927. He met his beloved wife Erika in Austria, from where they immigrated to Canada in 1951.

As a project superintendent and senior structural inspector for Perini Corporation, Kaiser Engineering, Bechtel Engineering and Casico he managed the construction of various hydroelectric dams, underground facilities and bridges in British Columbia, Labrador, Quebec, Ontario and Columbia, South America. Moving to Osoyoos in 1970, he established Arch and Angle Building Construction, through which he designed, constructed and renovated a number of notable buildings and structures in Osoyoos. For the last 15 years before his retirement, he was the Building Inspector for the Town of Osoyoos.

An avid sailor for 50 years, as well as a skier, fisherman, bowler and pool player, he loved life, and poured all his energy into his passions. John had a love of knowledge and learning, always seeking perfection in his endeavors. He was a life-long volunteer in countless projects for the betterment of the community.

Generous, energetic, and always good-humoured, John lived life to the fullest right to the end. All those who love and know him will sadly miss him.

A reception will be held at 2:00 pm Monday January 30, 2017 at the Osoyoos Elks Hall.

Hi John, so sorry to hear about your dad. He always made me smile when he came into the hardware store, I will miss him. My mom and dad have many great memories of sailing and building their house, especially him holding that iron ring up all by himself until the rest got enough beams in place to keep it steady….. You are in my heart and prayers.

From: Don Clark
Relation: Family friend

John, I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. Condolences to you and your family.
Wow, what a great bunch of memories. From skiing to sailing. The trips up and down Mt Baldy road were usually more exciting than the skiing itself! And, our 2 dads letting us ‘learn to drive’ when they went out sailing!
Your dad was always so full of life and always a presence. He will be missed.

From: Don and Sharon Snell
Relation: John sailed Seaspray catamarans and although I didn't attend too many Seaspray regattas since 1979 to 2003, I did come to Osoyoos annually for 13 years since 2003. I got to know John very well during that time. My first sailing regatta was a Seaspray North Americans in 1979 in Osoyoos. There were over 50 Seasprays there for that event.

John was a rare individual who positively influenced me. I came to know John through sailing Seaspray Catamarans and over the last 13 years attended the annual regatta in Osoyoos in September. John was always present and generous, helpful and interested in what you were doing.
He really wanted you to feel welcome. I was sad to hear of his passing and will miss him very much.
