Karl Richard Gustavson, age 80, passed away at home on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Karl was born January 28, 1937 in Birch Hills, SK to loving parents Verner and Mabel Gustavson. He was raised in Prince George, BC, and following high school joined the Royal Bank of Canada, beginning a long career. Karl held positions in Mayo, Penticton, greater Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, and Kamloops, ending his career in 1994 back in Vancouver as Area Manager for Vancouver Central. He founded the Oakridge Asian Banking Centre, a milestone for RBC marking the development of services tailored to the Asian clientele in BC. Over his career, Karl was known as a champion for the equal treatment of women and fair treatment of all in the workplace. He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club, as well as the Boy Scouts of Canada. In 1994, Karl retired to the community of Willowbrook, BC, where he was a member of the volunteer fire department, serving as Fire Chief for a number of years. He is survived by: Terry, his wife of 54 years; sister Bernice; son David (Filomena); son Kent (Rhonda); daughter Krista; and six grandchildren (Madeleine, Zachary, Eva, Ekiah, Elle, and Emma).
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4th at 11:00 am at the Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Chapel, 5855 Hemlock Street, Oliver, BC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Karl’s name to the Canada Heart and Stroke Foundation.
