Tribute

Kenneth Bruce Stephenson

June 18, 1944 – August 28, 2025

Ken passed away peacefully in Oliver, B.C. after a lengthy hospital stay. Born to parents Godfrey (Steve) and Rachael, he grew up in China Creek (located between Trail and Castlegar) with his brothers and sisters Len, Val, Robert, Judy, and Keith. He was an accomplished track athlete in his younger years and loved to play hockey. Ken also loved the water and, especially on a hot summer day, he always relished a refreshing dive into nearby Champion Lake or Christina Lake.

A bricklayer by trade, he worked for Teck Cominco, as a project manager in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and had his own business (Kootenay Masonry) in which he specialized in building fireplaces. While in Trail, he was an active member of the Trail Horseman’s Society – cattle roping and helping to organize events, work parties, and fundraisers. One of his daughter Kim’s favorite memories is of him dressing up as Santa at one of the Horseman’s Christmas parties – but the deception was revealed when she recognized his cowboy boots!

Ken loved to sing and he had a deep rich voice. He always had the perfect song for any occasion and would perform for anyone anywhere. It was a very special moment when he sang ‘Danny Boy’, an Irish Folk Song, at his son Bruce’s wedding which helped to bring the two families together. He loved Elvis, country, and gospel music. Ken and his wife Helen spent several years as ‘snowbirds’ travelling to Mesa or Yuma, Arizona to enjoy the warm weather and the social life there. Ken was often a featured singer in the annual park Grand Ole Opry. Even a week before he left us, he was singing Elvis songs to his nurse. Ken is survived by his wife Helen, son Bruce (wife Pauline), daughters Kim (husband Chris) and Sandy, and grandchildren Alexander, Caitlin, and Sean. He was also father to a stepson, Jamie Magee. Ken’s ashes will be scattered by members of his family at Christina Lake in a small private ceremony in the near future. Donations in his memory can be made by etransfer to the Trail Horseman’s Society: info@trailhorseman.com

Dear Kids, Nick and I were so sorry to hear that your dad had passed away. We feel so blessed to have a lot of memories though of living across the street from you when you all were little and how much fun we used to have at the grounds. I have a lot of regrets that we lost touch with each other. Goodbye good friend. May you rest in peace now.
