Knut Overnes
August 11, 1927 - November 30, 2016
Tribute
Wednesday November 30, 2016 Knut Overnes died at the South Okanagan General Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 89 years.
Predeceased by his parents; siblings Begga, Sofie (Ingeborg Kari, Kåre in early childhood), Ingeborg, Jakob and Arne.
Knut will be fondly remembered by his loving wife Helen; daughters Kari, Joyce (Richard Pielou); son William and granddaughter Chelsea.
Knut came to Canada to work as a farm labourer and then worked at small sawmills before arriving in Dawson Creek. Once there he worked on various construction projects including the DEW line before buying and clearing 200 acres of land, homesteading and starting a farm. Knut continued working in construction on the Peace River Dam and at Churchill Copper. He built a house for his family in 1968 with help from friends. In 1976 the family moved to Oliver where they bought and ran a motel and a small orchard.
He was very active in his community and volunteered for over 15 years for Meals on Wheels, belonged to the Sons of Norway and helped the Women’s Institute set up bake sales and workshops. He was an active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Knut and Helen liked to travel and made trips to England, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Panama, Finland, Russia and Sweden. In 1994 they camped across Canada in their Aerostar. He also enjoyed 5 pin bowling, reading, keeping up with the news, playing cards at the seniors centre and going out with the Naturalist Club.
Donations are accepted in memory of Knut for the Canadian Lutheran World Relief, 600 – 177 Lombard Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0W5, www.clwr.org
