Leo Mikolas
June 5, 1933 - February 14, 2016
Tribute
Leo Allen Mikolas died at age of 82 on February 14, 2016. He spent his final week under palliative care at the South Okanagan General Hospital. He was diagnosed with lung cancer a few days before his passing.
Leo was born at Gravelburg, Saskatchewan on June 5, 1933, the youngest son of Emily and Thomas Mikolas. He was the younger brother of Ted Mikolas, a pioneer orchardist who moved to Oliver in 1939.
He spent the vast majority of his life as a single man. Leo had a vast array of jobs and careers in Toronto, Vancouver and points in between. He moved from the downtown East Hastings area of Vancouver to Oliver approximately 20 years ago after several years working as the warehouse purchaser for a mechanical contractor.
Leo was a fiercely independent man who lived on his own up to the last week of his life despite being increasingly physically limited. Despite this solitary lifestyle, Leo loved a good discussion on a wide variety of subjects and built a community of friends where ever he lived. He was an avid reader of nonfiction and when his eyes started to fail, he spent hours reading or watching documentaries on his computer. He stocked a few backyard ponds with the goldfish that he kept until they got too big for his aquarium and always had a budgie – always named “Birdie”. He could be spotted cruising in his electric cart, usually in the early morning, on the hike and bike trail or anywhere is the town site and rural area.
Leo will be missed by his nieces and nephews in the Oliver area as well as his friends in Oliver and from the lower mainland. Leo, always a man who did not like to be the center of attention requested that no service or reception be held for him. Leo was at peace as he died and was looking forward to giving up his failing body and meeting his Creator and God.
