Leo Pedersen

November 18, 1933 - January 19, 2023

Tribute

Born in Rødding, Denmark November 18, 1933 to Kathrine and Arthur Sigurd Pedersen, Leo passed away January 19, 2023 with his son and daughter at his side. He was predeceased by his youngest son Eric Pedersen in 2018, and his wife of 61 years, Roma, in 2022. Survived by his children Wayne Pedersen, Audrey (Mark) Silbernagel, daughter-in-law Alison Robbins, grandchildren Lucas, Adam (Jenna), Ian (Thordis) Silbernagel, Jaren, Megan (Nathan) Pedersen and siblings, Eva (Ewart) Lock, Chilliwack; Lis (Rex) Farrell, Ladysmith; Verner (Gudrun) Pedersen, Aabenraa, Denmark and extended family in western Canada and Denmark.

In Denmark, Leo apprenticed at a building supply, served in the army, and played trombone in several dance bands. Leo schooled as an accountant after emigrating to Canada with other family members in 1957. He worked as a CGA at an accounting firm in Chilliwack. After moving to Oliver in 1972, he was a bookkeeper for several small businesses and did taxes for farmers. He dabbled in chimney sweeping, log home building, and sign making. Founding member of the Willowbrook Fire Department, volunteer with the International Hike and Bike Trail (Trans-Canada Trail), and the 232 Bighorn Air Cadets. Volunteer with the Kettle River Museum in Midway and the Oliver & District Heritage Society. Leo was a proud member of the Sagebrushers and RipOff Artists. Leo and Roma were BC Parks campground hosts for a few seasons.

Leo was an avid traveller, camper, explorer, maker, letter writer, square dancer, musician, reader, artist, woodcrafter, furniture maker, family log home builder with Roma, and more.

Travelling as a family around North America in a camperized laundry van in 1971/1972 was a precursor to the extensive travels with Roma later in life.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the amazing staff of Sunnybank Centre, McKinney Place and South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver. Thank you to Dr. Margaret Myslek and Dr. Mark Hamilton for their outstanding care.

A public gathering to celebrate the lives of Leo and Roma will be held Saturday, March 25 at the Quail’s Nest Art Centre in Oliver from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

We were so sorry to hear of Leo’s and Roma’s passing. They were both very dear to us. We treasure a quilt Roma made for us and of course Leo’s hand-carved signs hang proudly at our home. Most of all we will remember them walking hand in hand wherever they went. Our condolences to the whole family.

From: Mike and Denise Schiffer
Relation: Friends of Dad and Mom's.

Leo and Roma were such a friendly, kind couple. We enjoyed hearing stories when they got together with Dad. Dad always looked forward to his visits with the Pedersen and Silbernagels. Many condolences.

Greg and I were so fortunate to get to know you Mr. Petersen when you live near us. I always admired your dedication to stay healthy, and stay fit by going for your regular walks everyday. You never failed to stop and chat with me whenever you saw me outside working on any of your walks. I sure miss those days. The best memories I have of you is when Audrey and I came to visit you and your wife in Sunny Bank. You were holding your wife’s hands and just enjoying your time together and so content. Rest in Peace with your wife in paradise. You are both forever in our hearts. Our deepest condolences to you Audrey, Mark and to your whole family.

From: Dorothy Taylor
Relation: Long time friend of Audrey and Mark !

So sorry for your loss, Audrey.
Now your MOM and DAD can look after you. Just their bodies are no more and their spirits are with you at all times!

Hi Audrey and Family
we are a little slow and just found out about Leo and Roma. We have known them for many years and always enjoyed hearing about their ventures.
They were wonderful volunteers for IBHS and always had something to giggle about.
They house/dog sat for us on when we went on one of volunteer ventures and it was good to come back with the house in better shape than when we left. They were always kind and helpful and will be missed by the community and their many friends.
