Lydia Tilstra

December 1, 1922 - August 20, 2010

Tribute

On August 20, 2010, Mrs. Lydia Tilstra of Oliver, BC passed away peacefully at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age of 87 years.
She was predeceased by her husband Fred; her brothers Gustav, Ewald, Erich, Robert and her sister Olga.
Lydia will be fondly remembered by her loving family including her brother Theo in Dusseldorf, Germany; her daughters Anni Sinclair of Prince George, BC and Ruth (Bob) Burke of Heisler, Alberta.
Lydia immigrated to Canada in 1954 and married her husband Fred Tilstra in Prince George on July 1st, 1954. She resided in Prince George until 1976 when she moved to Oliver, BC where she resided until she passed away.
Lydia worked as a chambermaid/housekeeper for most of her working life in Canada. She also worked with Home Care in Oliver for a few years before retiring.
Lydia was very involved with her church, volunteering in many areas including the school, the clothing give-away program and ADRA soliciting.
Her greatest passion was the outdoors – she loved her garden and she loved to ride her bike on the bike path in Oliver – often riding up to 20 km’s per day until she was in her 70’s. Many people in the community were acquainted with her from her frequent bike rides.
A memorial service will be officiated by Pastor Bob Burke at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday August 25, 2010 at the Oliver Seventh-day Adventist Church. A reception will follow in the church hall.

Dear Ruth and Anni, We are so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear mother. Although we did not see her often in the last few years when she did come to visit it was such fun, and she remained very special to us. She cleaned house and did child care for us in the 70’s and until she left to make a new home in Oliver. We were pleased that her life there seemed to give her increased health and happiness.
Despite her arthritis and hip problem she was always energetic and cheerful and by far the best housekeeper we ever had. She came at a needy time in our lives as we had three small children and I was returning part time to my nursing career. She was always an inspiration in her spiritual life and in the genuine love she gave to our children. She was especially fond of our youngest son Jason. It was an honor to have her as a friend and we will remember her fondly. May you find peace in memories of her.
Love and prayers, Dr. Bill and Sandra Chow

Relation: Neighbour

My husband and I where neighbours of Lydia and her family and soon became friends. We have good memories of the family and we watched the girls grow up. Lydia was a very kind lady, full of love for my children as well as her own. My husband spoke some German and we helped her with her English. Sge always had a huge garden with lots of flowers and beautiful blooming shrubs, she was constantly working outside the home, with every spare moment tending her garden. We knew Lydia for 20 years, and I was sad when she moved to Oliver. I visited her there and was not surprised that she had a beautiful well attended garden, she was a credit to our community, always hard working and she had a smile for everyone. My sympathy goes out to Anni and Ruth (Bob), we will never forget your Mom.
