Tribute

On Friday September 9, 2016, Mr. Manuel Dourado Torres of Oliver passed away peacefully at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age of 85 years.

He was predeceased by his baby daughter Maria Amalia Corriea Torres; two infant sisters Maria Amalia and Sara; parents Antonio Inacio Torres and Maria Gomes Dourado and brother Carlos Dourado Torres.

Manuel will be fondly remembered by his loving family including his devoted wife Alzira Dos Santos Correia Torres; his children Manuel, Antonio and Angela; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother Duarte; sister Maria Amalia as well as many extended family and friends.

Manuel was born in Navais, Povoa de Varzim, Portugal, He served two years in the Army in Portugal. Manuel was married in 1954 to Alzira and immigrated to Canada in 1957. In 1968 he moved from Calgary to Oliver and purchased the family orchard. Later on they subdivided the property, kept the home and an acre and stayed on the family farm until his passing.

Over the years Manuel was very involved in his community. He was a proud long time member of the Elks and was a past Exalted Ruler, a member of Rotary, a long time member of Knights of Columbus as a Third and Fourth Degree Knight, the board of the BCFGA, the Conservative Party and the Portuguese Club.

Prayers will be recited at 7:00 pm Friday September 16, 2016 at Christ the King Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am Saturday September 17, 2016 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment and committal will follow at the Oliver Municipal Cemetery. A reception at the church hosted by the CWL will follow the committal.
