Mary Aitken
March 20, 1933 - May 7, 2014
Tribute
Mary Aitken, beloved wife of Stuart Aitken passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. She spent her formative years in Calgary, moving to Edmonton to achieve a B.Sc. in Home Economics at the University of Alberta. Working as a dietician in Red Deer hospital she met and later married Stuart on Dec 19, 1960. She created loving family homes in Edmonton, Calgary, Newton Hill [Scotland], Darien [Connecticut], Halifax [NS] and finally Osoyoos [BC]. Mary was a keen reader with a sharp mind, constantly questioning the world, its anthropological roots and current trends. A gifted conversationalist she always had something interesting to spark lively discussions at dinners and parties. If not reading Mary could often be found pursuing her other lifelong passion, puttering about in the garden. She actively volunteered everywhere she lived, the Glenbow museum in Calgary being one of many. Mary is survived by her husband Stuart; her children Bill (Wendy), John (Jenny) and Gillian; and her grandchildren, Laura, Christopher and Samantha. Mary was predeceased by her parents Arthur Maw and Margaret Maw (nee Dobson) and her brother William (Bill) Maw. A memorial gathering and buffet lunch will be held Sunday June 22nd at 1:00 PM in the garden of Mary’s Osoyoos home. All are welcome to attend. Condolences and RSVP for memorial gathering may be directed to the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Glenbow Museum website [http://www.glenbow.org/support/], or contact Twyla Freer at (403) 268-4189.

Stuart and family: we were very sorry to hear of the passing of Mary. We didn’t know each other well but enjoyed talking to her about her plants and the garden. She gave some very good advise on what we should plant. We are sorry that we cannot attend the memorial for Mary on June 22, we will not be in town. Our best wishes and condolence to you all. Stuart and Bill and all the Aitken clan,
I was so sorry to hear the sad news about Mary. I have such fond memories of the time you came to stay with me in Paris. Mary’s enthusiasm and energy was wonderful during that visit, and you were both so full of interesting things to say. As you gather on Sunday at the house in Osoyoos, please know that I will be thinking of you and hoping that the day will be full happy memories of Mary, and the family and friends you have gathered on the way.
Barbara
