Mary Flexhaug

January 12, 1923 - February 17, 2012

Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved and dedicated mother and grandmother, Mary Annette Flexhaug (nee Wood) of Osoyoos.
Mary was born in Liverpool, England on January 12, 1923. She immigrated to Canada in 1928 with her family as a young girl, settling on a farm near Lloydminster, Saskatchewan.
Mary later moved to Lloydminster where she married her dear husband Hasley on July 7, 1944. They were blessed with five boys. The family later picked up stakes and headed west to BC, where they settled in Bridesville, making their final home in Osoyoos.
Mary worked for many years at the Monashee Co-op in Osoyoos, as well as at the Starlite Motel. Her greatest love was for her family. She especially enjoyed preparing big meals for family get-togethers, and baked many a fresh fruit pie, or canned vegetables and jam from the wares in her thriving garden. Mary liked to read in her spare time; and also did alot of practical sewing over the years, both making and mending clothes for an active family of five boys.
Mary had a great love for the outdoors, and would often go camping with friends and family at local lakes, and enjoyed sitting around the campfire reminiscing. She often spoke fondly of her days spent growing up and working on the family’s prairie farm, and of the icily cold winter nights. She especially loved riding her horses on the range and to a nearby town; and during the winter months, with wooden sled for the family to ride in.
Mary was a long time member of the Catholic Women’s League and of the Royal Canadian Legion, having served in the Armed Forces in Saskatchewan as a cook for 200 soldiers in training.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Hasley in 1998, and by her eldest son Larry in 2010. She will be greatly missed by her sons Steve, Ron (Kathie), Dwayne and Byron (Andrea). Also remembered with fondness by her grandchildren David, Brian, Chris, Jenny, Jonathan, Ryan, Sean, Shaun, Chelsea, Jason, Justin, Shawna, Jayme, Kelsey and Ashley. Her great grandchildren are Emily, Lindsay, Isabella, Angelina, Diego, Rori, Carter, Blake, Josh, Julianna, Hayley, Ryker, Teá, Shaye, Noah, Harlowe, Ella, Alyssa and Parker.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by Fr. Dave De Souza at 10:00 A.M. Thursday February 23, 2011 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Osoyoos, BC. Interment and committal will follow at the Osoyoos Lakeview Cemetery. A reception in the church lower hall hosted by the CWL will follow the interment.
