Tribute

Mary Ellen Held (née Simon), a lifelong resident of Oliver, British Columbia, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at the home of her daughter Heide, surrounded by the love of her family.  She was 75 years old.

Mary was born in Oliver on October 21, 1950, to Steve and Kathleen Simon.  She was the youngest of three daughters and grew up alongside her sisters, Gloria Jean and Barbara Anne.  She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Barbara Anne.

On September 8, 1973, Mary married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Guenther Wolfgang Held.  Together they built a life centred on love, family, farming and community.  Their marriage of nearly 53 years was filled with devotion, laughter, hard work, and unwavering support.  The orchard they lovingly tended became more than a livelihood-it was a place where family, friends, and neighbours always felt welcome.

Mary’s greatest joy was her family.  She is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Guenther Held; her children Heide (Jay) Held of Oliver, Darren (Debbie) Held of Oliver, and Monica (Jason) Pelly of Princeton; her sister, Gloria Jean; and her cherished grandchildren, Autumn, Justice, Zoey, Lukas, Trent, Kayleigh, Jaelum, Quest, Liberty, and Wolfgang.  She also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory.

Throughout her working life, Mary was employed at the Osoyoos Diamond Steak and Seafood House, Husky Gas Station, Sagebrush, and Sunnybank Retirement Complex.  Although she eventually retired from her career, she never truly retired from the orchard, where she found purpose and happiness working alongside her family.

Mary had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel at home.  Whether someone stopped by for fresh fruit, a visit, or simply a conversation, they were always greeted with a warm smile, a generous heart, and one of her unforgettable hugs.  Her kindness, compassion, and welcoming spirit touched everyone she met.

In her younger years, Mary was an enthusiastic member of local ladies’ fastball and bowling teams.  She also enjoyed bingo nights and often joked that she was still waiting for the game that would finally make her rich.  She appreciated life’s simple pleasures and found happiness in spending time with those she loved.

Mary will be remembered for her generous heart, her tireless work ethic, and her deep love for family, friends, and community.  Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her kindness, warmth, and unwavering love.  Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, August 14, at 10:00 a.m. at Osoyoos Lakeview Cemetery, 9200-176th Avenue, Osoyoos, British Columbia.  A Celebration of Life will follow at 1;30 p.m. at Hillside Orchards, 459 Road 18, Oliver.
