Tribute

Mavis Sheila Grant (née Burnside) passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, in Moog House in Penticton, surrounded by her best friend Susanne James, Nurses she worked with in Oliver and friends.

Predeceased by her parents, Dorothy and Reginald Burnside, and her nephew, Andrew, Mavis is lovingly remembered by her brother, Derek (Rosemary), her sister, Janet (Larry), her niece, Chloe (Rob) McKillop and nephews, Shaun Williams, Stuart Burnside (Amber) and Nick Burnside of the United Kingdom; cousins in the USA, Canada and the UK, especially Linda and Jerry Mar and Lisa and David as well as  a wide circle of extended family across the globe. Special thanks to her Godson, Chris Fewtrell from New Zealand, who visited with her during her last days. She will also be deeply missed by her dear Canadian friends, Sandy and Susanne James,  Tara James and Randy Webster, Rob and Erina James and Jackson and Keaton who became family to her in every meaningful way, and her many dear friends in Oliver.

Mavis dedicated her career to caring for others as a nurse at South Okanagan General Hospital, where she worked until her retirement. Her compassion, professionalism, and steady presence left a lasting impression on patients and colleagues alike.

Born with an adventurous spirit, Mavis truly lived a life rich with experience as a Nurse and Midwife. Her journey took her from New Zealand to Australia, to England, Zambia, back to Australia, and ultimately to Canada, where she built a life filled with friendship and purpose. A passionate traveller, she explored more than 50 countries—each one adding to her curiosity and appreciation for the world. Of all the remarkable places she visited, Myanmar held a special place in her heart.

Mavis was an active and devoted member of Grandmothers of Africa and Friendship Force, organizations that reflected her values of global citizenship, cultural understanding, and community support. She also cherished photography and reading, passions that allowed her to capture the beauty she witnessed and continue exploring new ideas long after her travels.

Mavis lived her life with independence, curiosity, humour, and generosity. Those who knew her will remember her warmth, her stories, and her unwavering kindness.

Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched across continents and communities.

A celebration of Mavis’ life will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday March 7, 2026 at the Oliver Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 6417 Main Street, Oliver, BC .

Mavis Will firstly be remembered as a fellow country man
A lady full of adventure, a lady full of compassion, extending into her career in nursing, which I had first hand knowledge of in her midwife skills
Truly a very GOOD person 🫠

Mavis spent many Fridays at the gazebo at Greenleaves Village. Darren and I had only gotten to know Mavis for just over a year; if she wasn’t at the gazebo, she was out with friends playing music bingo…… she was one of the biggest social butterfly’s I’ve ever met. Until we meet again this next spring, in hopes of seeing you as a butterfly at the gazebo so that we made cheers.

She was one of the nurses when my children were born at SOGH and I so appreciated her wonderful care. I’m glad I was able to tell her more than once over the years how much she was appreciated. Such a beautiful and warm smile.
