Mike Kochan of Osoyoos, B.C. passed away on February 17 at the age of 81. Mike is survived by Maria, his lovely bride of 57 years. He is also survived by his brother, sisters and many nieces and nephews. He will be fondly remembered by all of his friends and relatives in B.C., Saskatchewan, Ontario and New Zealand.
Mike was born in Stenen, Saskatchewan on October 22, 1928 to Peter and Mary Kochan who were of Ukrainian heritage. Mike spent most of his career in the food industry both in Canada and the United States and was an award winning chef.
One of the highlights of his career was to prepare food for celebrities such Frank Sinatra, Howard Hughes and others when he was residing in Las Vegas. They loved his cooking. He also had a part as a chef in the original Ocean’s Eleven movie.
On his return to Canada Mike opened a restaurant in Kamloops. While he was there he appeared as chef on a television cooking show. Mike and Maria moved to Osoyoos in 1990.
Mike so enjoyed the outdoors; especially fishing and camping. He also loved the beauty of the mountains. Although he loved Osoyoos, he and Maria enjoyed spending time in Arizona in the winter months. He was a kind man with a rich sense of humor and he lived his life to the fullest.
Mike’s faith was an important part of his life and he was a member of the congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Osoyoos. A memorial service will be held for him at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Feb 24 at Kingdom Hall in Osoyoos.

Dear Marie & Family: Vonnie and I are so very sorry about the news of Mike’s passing. We have missed being around our neigbours in Osoyoos, especially Mike and you. Mike and I shared the same love of camping and fishing. Without a doubt, you and Mike are in memory as our best neighbours ever. In all those years, Mike was always a friend who shared his love for the outdoors with me many times.
Losing a life’s companion is such a difficult experience. I well know the grief you are going through at this time. It will linger and be a part of your life for quite a long time, but will ease. The missing him will never quite leave, as memories will always remind one of the many years of happiness you shared.
If we can do anything to assist you or the family at this time. tell Lillian. We could drive over and help in any way needed. I have and will continue to miss Mike and you. You were always perfect neighbors and friends. Mike is safe and loved where he is now. And you have family to share your remaining years.
We will be in touch with Lillian, as we want to stay in touch. May our Father in Heaven bless you with good health and an understanding of the gospel of our Savior. We will be in touch someway. Thank you, Marie, for the great neighbor and friend you have been to Evonne and I. We have such great memories of our life at Casitas Del Sol, mostly because of such great friends and neighbors. God Bless you until we see you this summer.
