Michael Patrick (Mike) McCarthy

January 10, 1960 – July 28, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mike McCarthy, who passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026, at Moog & Friends Hospice House, surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Mike spent many years in Elmira before moving west to British Columbia in 1993 with his partner at the time, Brenda Watson, and their family. They settled in Oliver, which Mike proudly called home for more than 30 years and where they raised Adam Pearce, Sarah Pearce, Benjamin McCarthy, and Jasmin Stanley together. Mike was one of seven siblings and the only boy. He grew up surrounded by six sisters, who remained an important part of his life.

Mike was a loving partner, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his kind heart, quick sense of humour, and the love he had for the people in his life.

Mike built a life centred on family, friendships, and the things he loved most. He worked for many years at Uniroyal in Kitchener before continuing his career as a drywall installer and painter. He took pride in his craft and the work he created with his own hands. Mike found happiness in the simple things, especially fishing, cheering on his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs, and staying connected to the sports he loved. He grew up playing hockey and baseball. His love of hockey continued throughout his life as he later shared that passion through coaching minor hockey, where he found joy in mentoring young players and helping them grow. One of the proudest moments of his life was coaching the Oliver Jets during the 2007-2008 season, leading the team to the league championship. It was an accomplishment he was incredibly proud of and one that reflected his lifelong love of hockey.

In more recent years, Mike found a wonderful community of friends through competing in pool tournaments, which brought him laughter and countless good times.

Mike is lovingly survived by his partner, Carola; his children, Adam (Kelsey), Sarah, Benjamin, and Jasmin (Braden); his grandchildren, Madison, Rylan, Jaydon, Percy, Lindy, and Ella; and his six sisters, Sandy, Gail, Sue, Tanya, Tricia, and Pam. He was determined to fight his illness long enough to meet his newest granddaughter, Ella. He was so grateful to have that precious time with her, and his family finds comfort knowing he had that time with her.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, Marjorie and Arthur McCarthy. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Carola, Mike’s loving partner and devoted caregiver throughout his cancer journey, as well as to the hospice team, healthcare providers, and everyone who supported Mike and his family during this difficult time.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Oliver Air Cadets Hangar. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Mike are invited to attend as we gather to celebrate his life and share memories.

Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the memories, laughter, and love he gave us. Mike will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
