Tribute

Muriel Avery, of Osoyoos BC     Passed Away on January 20th 2016

Muriel was a very strong and caring woman. Over the years she guided many souls with her well-disposed wisdom and unfettered altruism. She will be greatly missed…… Devon

Born in England in 1925, she joined the Women's Land Army in her youth when the second World War began, working on farms to provide food for her country, later she went on to college to study horticulture.

Muriel and her son Martin came to Canada in 1957 on the ship the SS Empress of Britain, coming across Canada by train to join husband Frank who was  waiting for them in British Columbia. They lived in White Rock for many years, she travelled in her job around BC as a merchandising Supervisor.

They vacationed in Osoyoos many times and fell in love with the area so much that is where they decided to relocate and build their new home.  Over many years Muriel had several businesses in town, Osoyoos Mercantile a department store, then later on she owned the popular Osoyoos Bakery/Cheshire Cat Cafe.  Her greatest passion was gardening, she wanted to grow flowers and vegetables in the desert  which she did with amazing great success. She absolutely loved nature, the beautiful living world around her, and her home on Osoyoos Lake was like a piece of heaven to her.

She was predeceased by her husband Francis Avery, and is survived by son Martin (Barb) Avery, grandchildren Leah (Aric) Avery-Walkington, Devon (Claire) Avery, Jacqueline (John) Martin, and great grandchildren Caydence, Kara, Christopher, and Dinah Bee.

Gran my fondest memories were over a cup of tea sitting in your kitchen. You always had time for stories , advice and always some cookies to share  I remember visiting you at the bakery and the Cheshire cat , you would let me do small jobs which were huge to me, but you let me try and that's all I wanted.  You watched me grow up and have a family of my own. They cherished you as much as I do. Gran brightened our world and taught us life lessons we will never forget.  Love you…… Leah

I will never forget her strong but stubborn nature yet always there to listen and tell you she's proud of you when you needed it the most. She will never be forgotten…Jacqueline.
