Nancy Hillmer

July 31, 1931 - July 28, 2018

Tribute

Nancy Margaret Hillmer passed away peacefully at home in Penticton, BC on July 28, 2018 at the age of 86.  She is survived by her nephew Eric Hillmer (Nancy) and their children Sarah and Colin.

Nancy lived a varied and fulfilling life.  She was born in Toronto on July 31, 1931, daughter of Whitney and Margaret Hillmer and younger sister to Guy.  Her congenital heart condition prevented her from some activities as a young child, but advances in medicine came at a fortunate time and surgery was successful.  Nancy was able to live a full and active life.

Nancy worked as bank clerk in Toronto in the 1950s she then moved to California.  There she became a Catholic Nun and trained and then worked as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in the Catholic Hospitals in the area, including Saint Joseph Hospital, Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and St. Luke Medical Center.  She worked at this until 1968 when she left the convent and moved back to Canada to be near her sister-in-law Elizabeth Hillmer (Mann) and nephew Eric.

Nancy settled in Point Grey, Vancouver where she started Tansar Crafts in 1968 on 4th Avenue.  The business included a studio offering classes in leather, weaving and pottery as well as a retail store selling crafts.

In the mid 1970s Nancy sold this business and moved to Oliver, BC to remain near to Elizabeth and Eric.  She enjoyed a peaceful rural life, living on 160 acres and overseeing the design and building of her house.  She kept busy with her kiln, potter’s wheel, paints and other artist’s tools.  Nancy was happiest when around animals.  Whenever possible, she had an animal companion and many horses, dogs, and cats were part of her family over the years.  She named her place Shrike Hill based on the local bird.  This area of Oliver is still known officially by this name.

Nancy moved to Penticton in the mid 1990s and lived in an apartment downtown, close to the Dragon’s Den art supply store.  She enjoyed the atmosphere of art and business associated with the owners of the store.  Her keen mind and sense of curiosity made for interesting conversations.

The last 6 years of Nancy’s life was spent at Pentoka Companion Care in Penticton.  Her family is grateful for the care and love they gave to her.

A memorial ceremony will be held at a later date.  Please contact the family for more details.
