Norma Shaw

February 23, 1955 - November 18, 2013

Tribute

It is with deep inconsolable sadness that the family of Norma
Elizabeth Shaw announces her passing on November 18, 2013. Norma
fought her illness as hard as she could and we are very proud of her
strength and dignity throughout her ordeal and in her final days.

Norma was born in Oliver to Russell and Lena Shaw on February 23,
1955, the youngest of four girls. She was predeceased by her sister
Regina Lorraine on Aug 28, 1952, her father Russell on Oct 7 2005 and
her mother Lena on Oct 3 2011.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her partner, Greg Jones, her two
sisters, Sandra (Frank) Jones and Brenda Shaw. She also leaves to
mourn her nephew Dean (Elena) Jones and children Alessandra and Dylan
and niece Angela deKergommeaux and children Sophie and Nicolas as
well as many cousins, great cousins and a multitude of friends. She
also leaves to mourn her stepdaughter Pam Jones and her children
Ryan, Daniel, Liam, Graham, Samantha and Avery.

Norma enjoyed camping with her family and all the cousins on our many
excursions. She enjoyed the company of her cousins, especially Rob
Shaw and Donna Taylor Rinfret. They were the closest in age and
seemed to always hang out together.

Norma took all of her schooling in Oliver and graduated from Southern
Okanagan Secondary School in 1973. She was awarded a bursary and
decided to take a business course from the Okanagan College in
Kelowna but first spent a year working at the Oliver Co-Op in the offices.

After college, Norma came back to Oliver and started as Accountant of
the Oliver Credit Union in 1975. In 1985 she was offered the Head
Accountant position with the North Shore Credit Union and decided to
make a move to the coast. Norma was employed there until 2002 when
she decided she wanted to come home.

After Norma moved home, she started her own little business called PC
Creations and was quite successful at it. She was a consummate
photographer; homemaker and was an excellent cook, bakery chef as
well as putting up preserves for sale and home use. She was also an
excellent seamstress, sewing many of her own clothes as well as
dresses for Mom.

A funeral service will be held officiated by Rev. Heather Burton at 1:00 P.M. Monday November 25, 2013 at the Oliver United Church. Interment and committal will follow at the Oliver Municipal Cemetery. Norma would
have liked donations to be made to the Feel Good Room, Southern Interior Rotary Lodge, 2251 Abbott Street, Kelowna, BC V1Y 1E2.

Norma will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Condolences may be sent to #6 5869 Main Street, Oliver, B.C.V0H 1T0

Remembering Norma Shaw
November 19, 2013

Norma has always been a key piece of the puzzle that is the Southern Okanagan Secondary School class of 1973. We have lost pieces of that physical puzzle, and, as we age, we will lose more.
Perhaps there is a temptation as this happens to think we are no longer a whole, vibrant picture. But maybe we are looking at this wrongly. We grieve the physical absence of the piece, but the shape remains in its uniqueness, emblazoned in our tightly knit web and in the larger web of life. Maybe what’s physically missing, or appears to be so, exists more powerfully in its absence. In fact, it never leaves our hearts. I grieve the loss of Norma’s physical presence. I believe in the Latin culture’s way of wailing and throwing oneself on the ground in grief, rather than the forced “celebration of life” that allows for no sadness. But that expression of grief aside, Norma remains as integral to our picture as she always was. The picture is still whole, and always will be, woven with a golden thread that binds us irrevocably together. I choose to believe that Norma and those who have gone before her travel with us toward some ultimate reunion. When all the physical pieces have gone, we are joined in a more real way that currently defies our understanding. Not only do I believe this, but I sense it as well. But I would choose to believe it even if it were not true because, in doing so, I am comforted and can ascribe meaning to this great mystery that is life.
Peace be unto you all.
