Nykola (Nick) Szmata

Tribute

On Saturday April 16, 2016, Mr. Nykola (Nick) Szmata of Oliver passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 94 years.

He was predeceased by his first wife Ida; son Robert Szmata and brother Matt Szmata.

Nick will be fondly remembered by his loving wife Martha; son Jim (Jeannette) Szmata; daughters Audrey (Bob) Peace and Shelley (Mark) Zieske; grandchildren Sherri (Ken) Caumartin, Troy Szmata, Mike Szmata, Janice Szmata, Shane (Carrie) Peace, Greg (Kelly) Peace; nine great-grandchildren; brothers Pete (Doreen) Szmata, Charlie (Mary) Szmata, Steve (Darlene) Szmata, John Szmata; step-sons Robert (Carol) Goltz, Lloyd (Diane) Goltz and Kevin Goltz as well as many extended family and friends.

Nick worked thirty-four years for the School District in Oliver as the cook in the cafeteria and was well known as the “Donut King”. He also owned and operated a café, two orchards and a motel. He also dabbled in catering and operated Centennial Park.

Nick was a director with the Oliver Credit Union for thirty years. He was also very active with St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oliver. Nick got the first hole-in-one at the Cherry Grove Golf Course in Oliver and enjoyed travelling with trips to Hawaii, Arizona, a Panama Canal cruise and to Europe.

A funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Darren Siegle at 11:00 am Friday April 22, 2016 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oliver, BC. Interment and committal will follow at the Oliver Municipal Cemetery. A reception at the St. Paul Lutheran Church reception hall will follow the committal.

Donations are gratefully accepted for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, #4 – 1551 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9 or a charity of one’s choice.

If You attended SOSS during the time Nick ran the cafeteria You will have the same fond memories of this good Man. Grabbing an apple or a ice cream treat for the bus ride home, Nick was there with a smile and quick word for everyone of us.
