Patricia (Pat) Mary Odowes

May 6, 1948 - December 24, 2023

Tribute

Pat was born in New Westminster, B.C. and was predeceased by her mother Toots and uncle Buddy Taft.  She lived in Minnesota, New York City, Prince Rupert, and Oliver, B.C.  She studied Law at UBC and in the sixties worked for the legal firms of Jim Argue in Oliver and Roy Trimble in Osoyoos.  Pat lived with her dear Uncle Buddy, who was like a father to her, in his home that housed a dance studio for children.  Together they enjoyed travelling to Las Vegas for shows, as well as to Japan, Egypt, and parts of Europe.

Pat had a genuine interest and concern for people, always remembering to phone people for their birthdays, often late in the evening.  Pat was a night owl.  She liked being with others and would often meet up with friends at the movies and the theatre.  Pat attended Oliver United Church regularly and with an open spirit would attend churches as well.  Pat was an active member of her community and a prominent fixture at many Oliver social events. Her presence will be missed by those who knew her.

A service for Pat Odowes will be held at Oliver United Church, 511 Church Ave, Oliver, BC at 10 am on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

Jody Harvey and I (Denny Raincock) lived across the alley from Pat in our early/school years. We played together. Pat loved movies, talking on the phone and reminiscing about the old neighbourhood . Rest in peace dear Pat.

From: Angie
Relation: Neighbors

Sending our deepest condolences to all that had the pleasure of knowing Pat. One of my fondest memories is she never missed a Birthday call. ,and she would let all the kids in the alley play in her beautiful forest in her back yard ,…There was only one rule and that was don’t hurt her flowers 🌺the kids had so much fun in her jungle back yard … RIP Dear Neighbor 💞

From: Ella (Ellie) Sasse Dilling
Relation: Through her Uncle Buddy who I still feel was a genius at dance.

My sister Janet and I were students of Buddy’s in Osoyoos and later Tonasket when he traveled each week to teach. Pat would come for our “concerts” to dance. Our family moved from Tonasket in 1964 but I always stayed in touch with Buddy and Pat through the years. She always sent a birthday and Christmas card and often called in between. In 2002 I believe I split from our motorcycle group to stop in Oliver to visit Pat and Buddy. I am so happy that we were able to have that in person time on their patio that day. Rest In Peace dear Pat. I so treasure your friendship and connecting me to my roots. I was blessed to have known you and your talented Uncle Buddy. You are both added so much to my life and my sister Janet. My Christmas card to Pat was returned to me just today, March 18, 2024. Her phone number was not showing up on my phone and I know I had it. Checking internet found her notice of passing with service this coming Wednesday. Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend. My prayers are with her friends who loved her.

Our deepest sympathy on the loss of Pat, she was a lovely person and truly a character! Her late night phone calls to my mom and dad to wish them a happy birthday, her calls to us to find out what was going on in our lives, her support going to my plays, she had a life well lived with joy and humour.

From: June & Ernest Phillips
Relation: friend

Ernest and I were so saddened to hear of Pat’s recent and sudden passing. It was a shock to get the news the day following her funeral on March 20th. We had been trying to reach her since Christmas week to no avail. We had visited over the phone in October & November as we did on other occasions during the year, either in person when we visited Oliver or over the phone. We would talk at length and recall many memories and fellow citizens we were mutually acquainted with remembrances of earlier years of Buddy and his dance school. Our children were each tutored by Buddy as many children were in Oliver. We will always remember Pat, her kindness, her interest in life, her sharp mind, her love of community and history and especially her love of people along the way. Life will not be the same without her and she will be greatly missed. She would share her favorite movies, social activities and visits with others, which we always enjoyed hearing about. I would often visit with her on the phone and then Ernest would get on the phone and talk about some mutually historic events they would enjoy discussing. It never got old. She will no doubt be happy to be reunited with her family and friends including our daughter Jessica who loved to visit with Pat & Buddy and was remembered by Pat at every opportunity. May God bless her for being such a light and for remembering others with love & kindness. Till we meet again my friend, always ……. June & Ernest

My name is Joy Vangen. I now live in Chilliwack so I didn’t hear of Pat Taft’s death until recently. I want to pass my sympathy on to those who were close to Pat.
I never knew her family – only by name such as Buddy Taft, her uncle who taught many Oliver children dance lessons. Pat never spoke of her parents but I heard her mother was “Toots” Odowes who I met at Sunnybank when I was an auxiliary volunteer. Toots was a lovely little lady in residence.
I’m not sure when I first met this unique lady who remembered her friends’ birthdays and special days. My husband and I moved to Oliver in 1979. After Norman died in January, 1996,, I probably met her at community events. I drove her to music in the park and would see her at many funerals and visited by phone. I knew that a mutual friend, Dedie Magnus, drove her to Osoyoos when they were both employed there. Pat enjoyed visiting with many people at concerts of all kinds of music, movies, and the local group of Bell Ringers.
Pat loved to phone friends, usually late in the evening. She often told me about a friend she phoned every Thursday. She was proud to tell me she was her bridesmaid. I’m sorry that I don’t remember her name but she meant a lot to her. All the old-timers will remember seeing Pat around town. I will miss her phone calls. She sent me the most beautiful, meaningful card at Christmas this year.
