Paul vander Velden
October 9, 1924 - May 16, 2020
Tribute
Paul vander Velden was born in Vlaardingen, Holland in 1924. He passed very peacefully from his temporary home to his home eternal on May 16, 2020 at the age of 95.
He was predeceased by his parents: Andries and Geeske, three brothers one sister and three nephews.
He is survived by Cora, his loving wife of 71 years. Sister and brother-in-law Joop and Liz Brehler, brother-in-law George Giesen, daughter Edna (Bill), sons Andrew (Deanna) and Adrian (Dennise). Seven grandchildren Glen (Hilary), Mike (Candace), Darren (Lisa), Derek, Jessie (Estie), Jenna, Justin, Taylor and Sydney. Eleven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Born in the Netherlands, Paul immigrated to Canada along with his new bride Cora in 1949. They lived and worked in Keremeos, Princeton, Copper Mountain and Mountainside until they settled in Oliver in 1956. Paul worked for Weyerhaeuser until his retirement in 1985.
Paul led a full life surrounded with friends, good times and loved ones.
Paul and Cora travelled back to the Netherlands many times first by ship and then by plane. Family meant a lot to him and as his children we got to know our grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins by visiting them in Holland and when they visited us here in Canada. Paul was known by his nieces and nephews as their favorite uncle.
In his retirement Paul along with Cora travelled throughout Europe, loved Hawaii, and travelled to many other states in USA.
Paul loved being a member of the Kiwanis. He spent many years volunteering at the Oliver Kiwanis Market.
Paul was man of faith. In his early years Paul was affiliated with the Oliver United Church, teaching Sunday School and as a Deacon. In 1990 the family joined the Valley Congregational Christian Church. As they did not have a church building to call their own, he was among the many of the congregation who built the church as it stands today.
Paul was not idle. He loved to socialize and stay active. He golfed at Fairview Golf Course for many, many years. He also enjoyed curling, bowling, lawn bowling, swimming and walking. He was a great handyman. Always fixing and painting within his own home and for others. He loved watching the Oliver Big Horns hockey team! He was one of their greatest fans. (Ve are number one!)
Paul always had a big smile on his face and a warm hello to all he met.
He will be missed but never forgotten.
The family sincerely thanks all the staff at Heritage House and McKinney Place for the excellent care he received. He was happy and content at both residences. He always expressed much appreciation for the kind and compassionate care given to him by the staff.
Memorial donations may be made to the Oliver Food bank or a Charity of your choice.
