Phuoi Thai

February 20, 1954 - March 31, 2019

Tribute

On Sunday, March 31, 2019, Mr. Phuoi Khanh Thai of Oliver passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family at the age of 65 years.

He was predeceased by his older brothers Chen Qing Cai and Tinh Khanh Thai.

Phuoi will be fondly remembered by his loving family including older sister Ying Can Cai; younger sister Hanh Thai; wife Ba Thi Tran; sons Minh Vien Thai and Galangda Thai; daughter  Thu Thuy Nguyet Johnson; grandchildren  Phat Thai, Phi Thai, Phi Minh Thai, Elizabeth Phuong Thai, Levi-Phat Thai and Henry Johnson.

He travelled around the world with friends and family with his last trip being to Vietnam, China and Cambodia.

Phuoi Thai was a Chinese Medicine doctor that left Vietnam in 1979.  He was one of the earlier Vietnamese boat people during this time.  He left everything for a new life and freedom for his family.  He stayed in a refugee camp in Indonesia for about one year and was then sponsored by the United Church in Oliver in April 1980.  At this point, he started his life all over again from nothing.

Phuoi Thai worked in Oliver as a farmer for Danny Roberts for over 16 years. In 1996 he was able to purchase 10 acres from Danny and took over a total of 35 leased acres to start PT Fruit Growers/PT Farm Market Ltd.  Through hard work and determination to provide for his family, he was able to own all the land that he leased and farmed for over 39 years.

Phuoi Thai had a challenging battle with cancer and eventually succumbed to the disease on March 31st, 2019.  Even through this tough fight, he was fortunate enough to be able to see all his friends and family from close and afar.  He was surrounded by family and friends as he peacefully left this world., feeling the love he brought to so many.

Please no flowers or gifts.

A prayer service and visitation will be held from 12:00 – 3:00 pm, Saturday, April 6, 2019 followed by cremation at Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service & Crematorium, 5855 Hemlock Street, Oliver, BC.
