Shirley Ann Wieland

November 23, 1946 - May 7, 2026

Tribute

Shirley Ann Wieland (née Mitchell), age 79, of Keremeos, BC, passed away on May 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born and raised in Glasgow, Shirley carried her Scottish roots proudly throughout her life. At the age of 25, she immigrated to British Columbia, Canada, and over the years, Shirley made homes in Prince George, Chetwynd, Lake Country, and finally Keremeos, where she spent the last 28 years of her life.

Shirley found her true calling as a veterinary technician, dedicating herself to the care and well-being of animals. Her love of dogs also led her to become a respected dog obedience trainer and breeder of Jack Russell Terriers and Brussels Griffons, passions she pursued with great knowledge, care, and enthusiasm.

An adventurous spirit, Shirley embraced opportunities to explore the world. She lived in New Zealand for four years and travelled extensively throughout Europe, Africa, and North America. She treasured the experiences, friendships, and memories created through her travels.

Preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Mitchell (Keremeos, BC) and her father, Robert Mitchell (Stanley, Scotland), Shirley is survived by the love of her life and devoted husband, Bill Wieland (Keremeos, BC); her daughter, Sarah Wieland (Arizona, USA); her son, David Mitchell (California, USA); and her cherished bonus daughter, Trudy Hastie (New Zealand). She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her compassionate heart, adventurous nature, and enduring love for animals. The family thanks the staff at Orchard Haven for their kindness, support, and care in Shirley’s last months.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Marmot Recovery Foundation in support of conservation efforts for the Vancouver Island Marmot population, a cause Shirley cared about deeply.
