Terry Yusep

May 25, 1935 - January 16, 2012

Tribute

Terry (TY) Yusep, of Osoyoos, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2012 in the South Okanagan General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Vegreville, Alberta, May 25, 1935, to Wasyl (W.A.) and Lena Yusep , Terry was a gentleman and a talented golfer; he, his father and brother Rudy owned the Rialto Hotel (Breeze Pub) for 33 years. The Yusep family bought the Rialto Hotel in 1946 and sold the property in 1979, the hotel caught fire in 1994 and was rebuilt as the Burrowing Owl Pub in 1996 and is now known as the Breeze Pub.

Terry attended elementary school in Osoyoos, high school in Oliver, worked for the Department of Highways (Survey Dept) stationed in Revelstoke, owned and operated a import/export company, was one of the greatest bartenders in the Bamboo Room of the Rialto Hotel, and created the business centre of the Ambulance, Lordco, MacDonalds, A & W, and the 7-11 Convenience Store at the intersection of Hwy 97 and Hwy 33. Terry was an avid golfer – proudly offering practice suggestions to anyone who was interested in the game. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and exploring local areas with a creek, stream or lake.

Terry is survived by his partner of 25 years Carol; daughters Nicole (Jason), Carolyn (Michael) and family; Carol’s son Chad; grandchildren Sophia & Bodin, brother Elmer (Gloria) Yusep; nieces Maylee (Arthur) Rubinstein, Danya (Ralph) Stapleton, Chelsea Yusep, and Tiffany Martino; nephews Tony (Carla) Martino, Bill Jr, Dorey, Chad Martino; Carol’s family, Lori (Bob) and Howard (Lorraine) of Smithers, B.C.

The family service will be on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The Celebration of Life for Terry will be held in the spring at the Osoyoos Golf and Country Club. The family is creating a Terry Yusep Foundation for Junior Golf, donations may be made at Interior Savings, Osoyoos Branch.

While Terry is remembered as a golfer, he also was a slick basketball player in his youth and made many lasting friends with the Osoyoos boys whose team lost the valley champonship by one point. May you have lots of hoop swishes and holes in one..

We remember Terry with the warmest memories. He was one of the
“special” people in Osoyoos. Always glad to see and visit with us. May he “rest in peace” and we will always remember him.

On those days when Terry came in to the office, he was always a kind and thoughful gentleman. I enjoyed knowing him and will remember him as he wonderful man he was. My condolences to Carol and his family. May you have great peace in knowing that he is with the angels now. God bless and take care.

We were deeply saddened to hear the news of Terry’s passing. Although I left Osoyoos years ago, on return visits we could always count on Terry to welcome us back. For anyone connected to Osoyoos or grew up there, Terry was “AN OSOYOOS INSTITUTION” or unofficial Mayor, if you will! He will be truly missed. Caro,l please know that we extend our deepest sympathies to you and to all of Terry’s family.
