Thelma Detjen
April 29, 1931 - March 6, 2016
Tribute
Thelma Detjen passed away at the Penticton Hospital in the early hours of Sunday, March 6, 2016 from complications following surgery.
She is survived by her son Stewart (Shauna), granddaughter Jennifer, great-grandchildren Kaiden and Kiera; nieces Sandi (Adam), Joe-Ann (Richard), Karen, Lee; nephews Gordon (Connie), Glen (Gwen), and Brad (Bette) Willson.
Thelma was predeceased by her father Herman and mother Gertrude (Brent), brothers Joseph, Eugene and Frederick, niece Colleen, and long time partner Gordon Willson.
Thelma was born in Summerland, B.C., and spent her early years at Faulder and Shingle Creek Ranch, moving to Okanagan Falls in 1943 with her mother and brothers.
From lambs to horses, Thelma loved all animals, from her early days on the ranch raising orphaned lambs, and in her later years with her involvement in horse racing.
She enjoyed a 35-year career at the Revenue Canada office in Penticton, retiring in 1992. This allowed Thelma more time to commit to the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Heritage Society, Housing Society, Women’s Institute and any other project that improved the life and welfare of Okanagan Falls residents.
Thelma will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 12:00 p.m, at Okanagan Falls Cemetery. All are invited to attend a Tea to follow at 1:00 pm in the Okanagan Falls School in celebration of Thelma’s Life.
In keeping with Thelma’s sense of community, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made towards any charitable organization benefitting the citizens of Okanagan Falls.

Relation: Work
I was so sorry to read of Thelma’s passing. She was my boss when I first started at Rev Can. She was firm but fair. In the years since we have met here and there and talked about the old times. I was glad that Thelma could spend more time helping out in her community when she retired. Rest in Peace Thelma. My sympathies to her Family.

I knew Thelma from working at Revenue Canada. I transferred to Penticton from Winnipeg in 1985. For the first little while I had little contact with anyone outside the three person unit I worked in. Then, I received a promotion which required a lot of travel, and the service of letter perfect legal documents. I got to know Thelma’s kindness, patience and compassion during those few days a month when all documents had to be prepared in the office. She was a generous person and I really needed her understanding during that time of my work life. I ended up on medical leave for stress related illness, and returned to work after nearly a year away. It was a time of huge change and transition in the department , in the late 80’s and early 90’s as we switched from paper to computers. That spelled the end of the “steno pool”, and the beginning of each worker doing their own letters via the computer system. I was privileged to be part of a retrospective of women/technology skit that was put on for her retirement party. It was lots of fun and laughter. She was a great person and will be missed. God Bless you and all of her family. Joy Harrison

We were at the tea today, to honor Thelma’s Life. What a life she led.
Always thinking of others. Doing what she could to make Okanagan
Falls a better place. We had a laughable time at all our Conventions
with Thelma’s sense of humour. A great Lady…she will be missed
by all the Ladies Auxiliaries.
